Looking to Buy a Sewing machine

Hello, I am looking to buy a industrial sewing machine for sewing leather. Not sure if any of you could help me with that purchase or know a company you can direct me to?

Hi Candice, welcome to the Lounge. You say you are looking to buy an industrial sewing machine for sewing leather. Unless you are making something like boots or shoes, a standard machine will suffice. You can pay a fortune for a modern new one or search ebay for a Singer like this:

It's not the machine that sews leather, it's the sewing machine needles and what you need are needles known as spearpoint, like this:

Sewing machine needles are designed to go through the weave of a woven fabric. Leather, being a hide, is not like that, so to penetrate it without tearing it, a spearpoint needle is your best option. You can use spearpoints on both industrial and domestic sewing machines.

Welcome to the forum. I think there are many choices. I like the singer 15-90 as a good all around leather and fabric machine. I personally own 6 singers and a Consew 206RB-1.
You can find a good singer for 100 dollars locally. That is how I found mine. Just remember to lubricate (easy job) them periodically and you will not have any problems. Please remember singer machines do not have model numbers stamped they have a serial numbers instead. If you see a 201 for under 140? pick it up. I considered it the Cadi of the Singer line!

Welcome! I have actually seen 3 Industrial machines go through our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore in the past year. They may even still have one. I'm in the midwest USA - Iowa - however I have no idea where you are at. Location (general) would help a lot as we're really from all over here, and lots of us tend to have a "nose" to find speciifc things.

the machine hatmaker used was maybe the singer 111w , my memory sucks lately, now i knew a shoemaker who did hats , and he used his 29k due to the free arm, but they dont make a nice straight stitch and the bobbin is tiny, i knew someone who took a metal free arm domestic, and took the base off and mounted the rest of the machine on a table free arm sticking out and did hats on it. Really the leather band is not that thick and the felt is not hard to sew, i starting building one once i was gonna use a old elna no 1 grasshopper and i never finished it, its still down in the cellar. 59lark

This is the first time in a long time I've logged into the Lounge, though I see some loungers on the facebook page. I logged in specifically to see if anyone has used a Singer 29-4 to sew in reeded sweats. It's a free arm, with a small arm and lock-stitch, and the head also looks to be angled in the pictures I saw. I ran across one at a pretty good price. I though it had potential, and for a lot less money than for a machine designed for the purpose. Can you tell me more about the results the shoemaker got?
