I have been searching the web with nothing in sight only found 2 that were $500 and $300

Sometimes a description in search wont work and only the name of a hat leads us to it.

Im looking for a Black 5”inch or bigger would be cool, cowboy hat with a normal sized crown at an affordable price.
Wool is fine.

How about a Tom Mix? You might need to iron out the curl to get the full five inches. You can also have one made for you; Agnoulita on Etsy (Agnoulitahats) can make you one in wool or fur felt for less than the hats you’ve been looking at.

I don't know of any off the rack hats with a 5" brim. Knudsen and Last Best West offer them on custom hats. I'd imagine Buckaroo as well.

The Stetson Tom Mix is 5 inches, but the curl eats up some of the width and would need to be ironed flat if the full 5 was wanted.

I think the OP was looking at a more economical choice hence my Agnoulita suggestion...maybe $150 with shipping?

Guess some info needs to be added. You won't find a decent factory made hat over 5" Most won't make 5" on a good day. I've never seen @ 6" and darn few at 5". At 5" wool hat is just junk and not worth buying IMO. Brim won't hold its shape. Most store bought cowboy hats will be 4" +/-. Going rate for a custom built hat, on a Winchester 100% beaver blank is $450 plus shipping. 5" brim hats are not the norm. Most blanks come in 4.5" +/- once blocked. It is pretty much impossible to get a brim bigger than 5" on the Winchester blanks if you have a 7+ size hat and want a 5 to 6 inch crown. 6" open crown is pretty typical in a western hat prior to shaping. 5" is a short crown. 7" is not uncommon. Wearing them there is a huge difference from my perspective between a 4" brim and a 5" brim. More yet when it gets over 5". Same with crowns, 5" is pretty short, 6" a better fit and a 7" is too tall. I wear a 7.5 hat size.

This is a typical store bought cowboy hat, 4.5 Brim, 5" crown. It was made by Flying Cloud, a Amish hat maker and a really good hat for the price. May be the best "cowboy" hat you can get for the price currently.

This is a 5" crown, 4.75" brim, custom made 100% beaver hat. It is a BIG hat by any standard in a part of the country where folks are used to seeing big hats.

This is a 5.25" brim and a 4.75" crown....it is a BIG hat I don't wear when it is windy. Seriously. As I mentioned I wear a 7.5 hat. Big head and I am 6'1" 200+ on my good days. Bigger the body and head the easier it is to wear a big hat. Something to think about when looking for a big brim hat.

Hi there! I am not sure where to ask about this so if it is the wrong place please let me know. I bought this hat at an estate sale the other day for just $6. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is rare or how old it is or it's actual value? I love the look!

It's a Charles Knox hat that is cashmere.

Welcome to The Lounge!

We don’t see a lot of interest in woven hats here, most prefer felt hats. We have threads on dating hats, and there is a great website called The Hatted Professor that is very useful in getting approximate dates of manufacture. The labels behind/under the leather sweatband are useful for dating hats too. Without claiming any expertise in your type of hat, I’d say it’s neither very old nor particularly valuable, though certainly worth what you paid for it. You could search ebay to see what similar hats sell for.

Since your hat is not one of the types we focus on I’m not sure how much help you’ll get here. What’s ultimately most important is that you like the hat and get to put it into use.

Great find! Welcome to the Lounge.

Brent (above) is right, these wool hats are not favorites on the Lounge. I think you also may have hit on something - it could be a woman’s hat. It certainly has a great look, do you think maybe 20s retro?

The Hatted Professor site will key in on that black sweatband and the Charles Knox label. I’m no expert on the brand, but the hat is probably 60s at the earliest.

Hopefully you wear the hat and enjoy it and come back to the Lounge for more. Most folks are happy to see new members and happy to help!

Daniel

Here’s a Stetson I just picked up, after commenting that I had more than enough black homburgs. At $50 or so I couldn’t resist. Does anyone know about these haberdashery Stetsons without quality designators?

I will read more on the size tags, but honestly I am never sure about the iterations of the keyhole tags. Can anyone add a bit for this one to help me clear it up?

This will be a fun hat to receive!

If I were to guess based on information in some of the Stetson threads, it is c. mid-late 40s vintage, perhaps just prior to the maple leaf replacing the stars. Nice Homburg BTW.

Can’t say from first hand experience but I know Jaxonbilt hats had a reputation for really large hats some time ago. They also do the conformer by mail like Art does. Maybe look them up. Johnny

I’m (obviously) new here. I recently picked up a vintage Country Gentleman Trav’ler fedora on EBay for a grand total of $5 dollars. It’s 100% suede and made in the USA. That’s all the info I have on it and that comes from the tags inside on the band. It seems barely worn if at all. I’m wondering if anyone here would have any idea of a ballpark as to when it was made? The seller said it was an estate find and that was all the info he had.
