I would guess it's a civilian foul weather hat of some sort; could be for skiing, though equally it could have been designed for the cold and wet of a trawler... Reminds me of the hat Dave Lister wore for much of Red Dwarf/i].

I just want to add that I received my Akubra “Blue Mountains” hat from Hats Direct.
It only took 9 days from placing my order to delivery at my door in Florida!
Naomi & Trudi were fantastic to deal with.
I was unsure of what size to order as I measured about 59.1 cm and read that the sweatband will shrink down a bit.
They searched their inventory and found one that was a 60, but actually measured 59.5.
I think that the fit is perfect!
It fits slightly loose, but not enough to need to use the foam fillers.
I would recommend them to everyone!
Will post a couple pics when I can get my wife to take the pics of me wearing it.
Thanks to all of you for your great advice and to FL for being such a great resource.

Hello my friends, I’ve searched everywhere I can think of to no avail, I’m looking for a nice summer Homburg, something in a pale colour, ideally a straw one but a light weight felt would do, size 57 UK that’s the modern stuff or 7 in old money.

Any ideas folks?

Matt

Dobbs El Dorado. It's a shangtung Milan, but should be pretty available.

If you have a pile of cash to burn:
https://optimo.com/collection/the-homburg-52
https://www.brentblack.com/mens-montecristi-panama-hats.html#Homburg

Inbetween the Dobbs and the Optimo/BB in terms of price, would be Art Fawcett. I bet he could make you one in Milan or Panama.

The Dobbs looks great but I’m finding it hard to find one in the Uk or Europe.

If you're looking for light weight it won't be a felt. I've never seen a homburg made of light weight felt, which is not to say they could not be out there, only that I've never seen one. Bowlers were sometimes produced as light weight and advertised as such, like this Rehfus Zephyr (below), but I've never seen a homburg advertised the same way.

Homburgs in a pale colour are rare too, certainly vintage ones. The lightest one in colour I've ever seen is this Lembert I have. PM me if you're interested.

You can ask Mr. P at Agnoulita (on Etsy or https://www.agnoulitahats.com/shop ). He can make you a custom homburg or lords hat in Panama or Milan. I’d guess it would be less than $200. They aren’t to be spoken of in the same breath as Optimo or VS, but for the price they are very serviceable hats and they only take 2-3 weeks to be made.

Does Mike block and finish Panamas as homburgs? I’ve never seen one.

I don't recall if I've seen a Hommie Panama or not from Mike, but I spoke to him before I went to Ecuador last December about possibly bringing him some tall crown/wide brim hat bodies to make western Panama hats with and although he didn't have a specific block for the style he assured me he could do it.

I do know that he has done curled brims on some Panama hats before and think he could do a Homburg as well. Best thing to do is give him a call to see what he says.

It's most likely a Silk Top Hat (defintely not Beaver but could be Melusine). Tremel was located in Herford, Germany. I am not sure when they went out of business but I will do some more research. There are some great photos from this book (see below).

"Herford zwischen 1900 und 1960" By Eris Valentowicz.

"After the death of the founder August Tremel in 1924, his sons Adolf and August took over the hat factory and built a new building in 1927 at the same location. Above the hat shop, here around 1930, was the hat maker's workshop."

"For the production of a folding cylinder "Chapeau claque", a basic form, the galette, was first made. This photo from the 1950s shows a Tremel hatter holding two Galettes in his hands. The plush was mounted on the godet during the next step."

One of the pages is missing from the preview but you can see the rest of entry here. Some really great photos!

When you have time could you please post this in the Germany and Austrian thread?

Update: I found some more from the book "Herford zwischen 1900 und 1960"
By Eris Valentowicz. They went out of business sometime in the 1960s.

"While hats and folding cylinders were made in the Tremel hat factory in Llibberstraße from 1869 until the 1960s"
Can you please tell me how to tell the difference between silk and melusine?

I have recently taken in this new specimen and wonder if anyone is familiar with the brand. It's pretty clean, so I might just wipe it down and wear it. It's got kind of a velour feel to it. Pictures are below:

O yes. Fléchet is a French maker. They did special finishes very well. There are several examples of Flëchet hats in the French makers thread. I believe there was an American license for the brand at one point. Your hat seems to be for the French market by the original maker though.
