Looking for a "Bogie" hat on a budget..

I just received a steel gray Biltmore with a 4 1/2" diamond crown and a 2 1/8 inch snap brim. As I reshaped it for a tight pinch, I raised the crown to 5". Makes a good Bogart for about $120.00 The hat is done in their "president" grade of fur, I am very happy with it for the cost.

I just received a hat from village hat shop that, though it is wool felt(I KNOW, I KNOW), more closely approximates the look of the Bogart fedora. I emailed the shop and asked if this hat could be made in fur felt, and Bruce from the shop advises that if I can get 6 total orders for the hat(all the same color), then he can have this hat made in fur felt for $95 per hat plus shipping. Take a look at the Jaxon c-crown fedora, and just imagine it in steel gray...............mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

If you are not one to wear feathers, then you are special in that way.

I took a feather off the side of a western hat I bought because it was too, too big and the hat looked classy, but the feather hokey.

Being a gal, I sometimes place a flower in a hat, but not in my fur felts, no pins or holes. Sometimes I use a scarf if I want to look tres femme.

But I leave the little feathers in place now, knowing what they signified centuries ago.

It doesn't bother me that much and I'm not religious at all. They way he says it is almost like "god bless" which is a wish of good fortune.

He's not trying to preach to us, didn't say one thing about the cigarette hanging out of my mouth, or try to convert me or some crap, so as far as I'm concerned, if he wants to display his faith, that's his deal. I don't take it personally...

Isn't the frame in your avatar a colored black and white scene? Bogies' hat could actually have been gray or brown in Casablanca.

Is it true you can use Scotchguard on a fur felt fedora and not harm it? Mine are really soft and fine; I would probably be cautious and spray some on one spot first to make sure it did not ruin the silky smooth feel of the hat.

I thought fur felts were water-resistant to some degree. What are the experiences of folks caught out in the rain in these hats?
How about soft versus hard hats? Beaver versus hare?

Re: Bogie. In Casablanca, he wore a trenchcoat. Most of them were tan. One would think if he wore a tan coat, he would not wear a gray hat, but one in a brownish hue, or tan.

I agree with gcollins on the religious stuff. It not so much offends me as it strikes a political sore spot:I do fear that, in the future, if people do not wake up, we may actually be living in a theocracy.

Just accept Shane for who he is. You don't have to believe what he believes, just his right to believe it. He has a constitutional right to his beliefs, so unless the moderators of this board say otherwise, just ignore whatever offends you. This country has gotten so damned politically correct that if the slightest thing offends someone, then they feel they have the right to stomp the offensive thing into oblivion just so they don't get offended anymore. Jesus is far more important than hats.....or anything else for that matter. As long as I am running this joint Jesus is welcomed here.

I am an American. If someone had a problem with me being an American, I would not try to be less so to make others more....lets say comfortable. I wouldn't wish anyone to feel wierd for my nationality...but I wouldn't shy away from it either. I am proud to be an American....and far more so to be a Christian. My hope is that won't steal anyone's joy of hats.

I think it is an odd coincidence that I sent him a PM thanking him for his stance for Christ before seeing this thread.

I haven't really seen much of the Keppler Bogie...but I heard it was pretty nice...though I don't think it could compare to my $14 + shipping +optimo shaping cavanagh (thanks again, Nathan!)

I haven't seen a Keppler Bogie but noticed that a number of hat shops, besides Village Hat Shops, have "Bogart" hats.

hats-plus.com and dadshats.com had Bogart hats, I noted that they were 2" rather than the 2 1/2" brims. Hatsinthebelfry had a nice looking Bogart hat, but it was in wool.

FYI, Village Hat Shop also has a fancier fur felt Bogart for those with fatter wallets. I saw it at Seaport Village on Sunday. It looked like the regular Bogart but had stitched brim edge and had a softer feel to it. It was a beauty. It was also $200.

I know I caused this mixed thread to move to advertisements of religion, and people here want to talk about bogie hats. Sorry about that.

We cannot debate the religion thing here, nor take sides one way or another. I made a polite request, and it's Shane's choice.

I am confident that Shane--who we all respect for who he is of course--will consider complying with my request out of his selfless love, humility, and personal relationship with Jesus. It is obvious that he strives to walk the walk. We are all sinners, alas!
