Long Oval versus regular size

Hello Gents!

Here is a question for you. Long oval seems self explanetary, the shape of the hat is more oval than round for the size. BUT how much of a difference does it make? I take a 7-1/8 size hat and these seem to fit well, but how much difference is there to a 7-1/8 LONG OVAL?

Guess I'd have to try one on to see, really, as I don't ever recall seeing one in person.

Best regards,

Long oval

You might need a filler of some kind in either front or back behind the sweatband. Maybe not. Good luck!

I have a 50-year-old western Resistol marked "long oval" that fits me fine, and I have a regular oval-shaped head. I have another old Resistol that fits the same. I have a 30-year-old western Stetson long oval that requires a piece of foam in the back to keep it tight. I have a western Resistol marked "regular oval" that requires bits of foam on the sides to keep it firm. I have a 40-year-old western Resistol marked "7 1/2"--I wear 7 3/8 and it fits me fine. I think there's a lot of latitude out there.

Latitude and age

As hats age, some shrink a little, some a lot, some not at all. Some, if they are worn a lot, shrink around the wearer's head. And there is a lot of lattitude. I have long oval head, and long oval hats fit better. But short of custom, there aren't many, so I wear both.

It depends on the company and you should expect a lot of latitude. Age makes a difference as well. Fifty years ago, a Long Oval was not what it was twenty years later. Now you can't even find them off the shelf.
Imagine if those well fitting Long Ovals you have were regualr ovals. They would fit tighter or not at all. Maybe you are a Long Oval and just don't know it. ;)
I was going to say that a Long Oval is about a 1/4 of an inch bigger but MT already did. ;)

Regards to all,

I wear a 7 3/8 LO. A regular 7 3/8 is a tad tight. A 7 1/2 fits perfectly at the front and the back, but there are gaps at the side. So whatever your size is, if you're a LO, the next size up may fit right fore and aft, but not port or starboard. Dunno if that answers your question, but regardless, happy Friday evening, and Prost! :cheers1:
