Linen trousers

So I'm after a pair of linen trousers, high rise and wide legged (9-10" hems). Personally I'm after a darker colour- brown, grey or charcoal. Also available in UK or Europe. However if anyone else wants to discuss any options, I think that would be good for the thread as well.

Scott Fraser does a great pair, but at £150 before even hemming they are probably out of my price range.

Thomas Farthing, do do some quality gear, but it's not cheap. See it in person and you can see the quality. I suspect they make their models size down or do maybe have too slim/ modern a cut at times. But they do have potential as a brand, sell some great period style accessories. Staff at the stop are great as well, very relaxed and friendly, with a genuine interest in vintage clothing.

On the other end of the price scale, but UK made, I've included Morellos. I'm not after bags myself, but I put this link in, since I think it gives a better indication of the quality than the studio shots. I've seen some of their gear in person and it looks good, mix fabrics, but in cuts that are period accurate. During the '50s plenty of trousers would have been a mix or fully synthetic fabric anyway. I did try to get some Brown linen pegs through them, but unfourtunately they had sold out in my size and all of their gear seems to be limited runs of fabric? They were very pleasant to deal with.

Old Town do their trousers in linen - see, e.g. - https://www.old-town.co.uk/collections/product/products/high-rise-trousers Not cheap, though, and note that linen will always wear faster than cotton - at least in my experience. If you're open to a lighter cotton rather than linen, there are other, cheaper options. Old Ton themselves do that.

These only come in khaki, BUT at £29.99 a throw they're ideal for throwing in the washing machine with a fiver ready-to-go Dylon pod in your colour choice (e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Dylon-...?ie=UTF8&qid=1530871368&sr=8-3&keywords=dylon) - prices vary, but usually well under a tenner. I have a pair of these myself (undyed), and based on similar previous purchases through SoF I'd expect to get three to four Summers of significant heavy wear out of them. (The last pair wore at the hem where I cuffed them rather than the usual upper-inner thigh.) I'm considering dying half a dozen pairs myself for next Summer.

I've plenty of chino cotton trousers, so it's definitely other weights I'm thinking about. Lighter ones obviously, given the fact I'm initially looking at linen?

I would guess that the ones I have from SoF are maybe 10oz; they feel just slightly heavier than the SJCs. The SJCs might be your best bet if you want something wide and high; Marksies have some decently high ones in their current range (about forty quid, I think), but they're much more akin to late 50s pegs, quite a slim leg.

It might be stating the obvious, but are you aware of how linen can look after just a short period of wear? My suit, seen below, has crumpled trousers just from driving the hour's drive to the wedding that we attended that day. Look too at the jacket's sleeves, see how the creases just simply stay there. It's a beautiful material, so lovely and light but a nightmare if you want to appear pristine and not like the proverbial, dragged through a bush backwards.

Your choice of dark colours, brown, grey or charcoal will go to some lengths to conceal the creases but even dark colours can't hide the crumpled effect completely. However, there is a subtle way of overcoming the creasing effect, but it does depend on how much of a purist you are. The photo below is from a pair of trousers that my wife altered from slimline to a more acceptable wide trouser hem. They are made from a mix of linen and calico. Calico is a strong strand of cotton, so strong that it's often used in book-binding. You get the lightness of linen with the strength of cotton, and of course cotton is that much cheaper. The close up shot is that of the strengthening support that she sewed around the trouser hems, it also gives you a close up of the actual weave of the fabric.

Thanks lads for the recommendations. I've had a quick look at 'Sparks, but they all seem too low rise. I noticed when I did a search for Calico Trousers- they were clearly popular during the 20s/ 30s, but can't seem to find anything being made right now that suits. Where are those from @GHT

But they're a bit too wide for my tastes and it seemed a shame to get them and taper them in. However in retrospect might of been a good idea?

Depends how wide you're comfortable with, really - they're very much an accurate 30s look. I think Simon did plan at least on doing a run of the slimmer, EDwardian / 20s cut in that lighter fabric, but not sure what the position is there now.

The difficulty for me is what I want is the late 40s to mid 50s look. So a decent hem, but not the near footwide Alex is wearing above. However it most other places they'd need very little change. They do look good, but don't quite fit what I'm after.

Just felt at the that if I altered them, I was losing something of what Simon was trying to create.

My Linen Chino was totally uncomfortable in the beginning, but after some washes it's fine! Love it.
