Hanhart wristwatch

First up, sorry if this is the wrong place to be!

I like Hanhart watches as seen on ELC's website and numerous
others. They seem to sell for £1400+, nice though they are, that's a bit
steep for me. So I am wondering how on earth is this possible -

Does anyone know if this is a manufacturer of good repute, if anyone owns
one of these, I wondered what they thought of it.

Many thanks. E.E.

The CWC military watches are a high quality item and seem to me to have a suitable retro-look to them:

ST11330.JPG

This model - the G10 - can be found at www.silvermans.co.uk for GBP79.99. Product number 80034.

Their blurb:

"The definitive military watch, supplied to MOD for issue to servicemen. Clear,
precise, long-lasting, tritium light source, acrylic glass and battery hatch.
Current issue with thousands in service, continuing to be the choice of the MOD. Swiss made using Swiss parts to extremely high standards.
Supplied with issue 18mm grey strap"

Might be worth a looksee.

Russian Poljot "Hanharts"

As you'll be aware, it's a fake. Visually it's not too bad and has the inscription on the back (which the modern Hanharts have, but the original WWII do not) and is missing the usual 'calender' which has been in the past a dead giveaway to being a fake (Hanharts don't have the calender). On the bay these normally average at £100. Made in Russia, you take your chance with it with probably little comeback, as they are breaking the law[huh]

I'm aware that Hanhart has taken legal action against Poljot for making such copies.

Hanhart

Thanks very much Paddy. I've deleted the link. It's like they always say - 'if it's too good to be true' etc.
Would you have a preference for Hanhart, Leco or Tutima? They all seem to
be out there as gorgeous reproductions, how can you decide? Buy one of each! - end
of problem....... E.E.

The Hamiltons are very good watches. They have mechanical and quartz watches that have virtually the same look they had in WWII.

You can even get an automatic movement with a sapphire crystal for about $300 on the internet (same ETA movement as watches costing 10 times that). The quartz watches are even less.

Fakery issues aside - on which Paddy is, of course, entirely correct - Poljot watches are of a good quality. I've had good personal experience with Vostok, nice solid and reliable watches, great retro look and cheap enough that you're not scared to use them. I got mine from a dealer who runs the site:

www.russia4u.co.uk

Stuart is easy to deal with, quick postage, comes back to queries quickly.... good customer service. He has a whole range of Russian watches on that site at all price levels. I intend when funds allow to purchase the Vostok 1943 model in chrome with a black leather stap for semi-formal evening wear. There is also a link there to his newer, sister site selling Orient watches, a Japanese brand. Some of those look great - I intend to peruse those in due course too.

Prices vary from around £20 up to I think £250 at the top end.

Personally I refuse to wear Russian watches, but that's based on emotional issues (my grandfather fought in two wars against them, they stole my mother's home, and so on).

Otherwise, there can be some real deals had with the Russian stuff, things from the Soviet era ranged from rubbish to stunning. You just have to know or you have to know someone in the know...

I bought myself a "new" vintage watch ....

I will post some of my others in the next day or two, I have
been collecting 1950's clothing since 1979, and watches since
1995. I just found this Forum- you guys have a great thing going
here! I hope to be able to add a little to the fun. Thanks for looking !

Rotary Watches-are they of a decent quality for the cost? Comparable to what other brands? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have never heard about that brand either. Looking at the company's homepage I get these impressions:

1. Most of the watches are quartz movements - which is a very bad thing in my book.

2. I am unable to find out what kind of movements there are to be found in their mecanical watches - this is mostly not a good sign, if the movements were good quality ones they would not have kept quiet about it. Most likely the macanical watches they make are fitted with cheap asian movements, some of these are of af fair quality, but most are not.

3. Some of the watches are really good looking with a nice vintage flavour - especialy the ones to be found in the "Traditional" range.

4. The prices I have seen in various online stores seem to match the quality of the watches - maybe a bit on the expensive side. If you can find these watches on sale (ex. 20-25% off) they would seem to be good value for the money.

But, this is all based on information I have obtained on the Internet - I have no personal experience with this brand.
