I just had someone tell me that the Black Stallion is not being made by Schott this time around. He said he spoke to both Legendary and Schott and showed a note confirming this from Jerri at Schott. I haven't personally confirmed this information, but wanted to pass it along. This person has also ordered a jacket.

For what it’s worth, however created the Beck Horsehide motorcycle vest for Legendary did a top notch job so if this “information” proves to be accurate, I hope the vest maker is also doing the Stallion.

For what it’s worth, however created the Reed Horsehide motorcycle vest for Legendary did a top notch job so if this “information” proves to be accurate, I hope the vest maker is also doing the Stallion.

Hm, they did remove the “made by a manufacturer of motorcycle leathers in New Jersey” thing from the product page that was there when I ordered.

Someone posted on Reddit saying:

”I want to clarify that this is not a collaboration with Schott or in any way associated with them. I must say, though, that it's a stylish jacket, but it wasn't manufactured by Schott. Additionally, Legendary USA is not a dealer for Schott, so I'm uncertain where you obtained your information from. Let me know if you can provide any more info!”

However, Legendary is listed as a dealer on Schott’s website, so this person is at least partially misinformed.

It also still has the Schott product number.

I’m a bit concerned–the photos on the product page are of the old Schott version (with the new label photoshopped on). If it looks like that, I’d be pleased.

But the jacket on the homepage and Instagram looks like a Five Star in its details…

Is this a bait and switch? Is that why it's cheaper than the last run of these jackets? Who is the maker if not Schott?

The page for the last edition of the black stallion (now gone) showed it as $1299. Now I'm not 100% sure if that was USD or CAD, and I recall this same thing causing some minor confusion several pages back. Screenshot courtesy of wayback machine:

That's the special edition with the wool lining. The nylon lining one was significantly cheaper.

Anyway, I want to get to the bottom of what's going on here. Funny how this has switched from excitement to trepidation for us…

Three things that have my mind at ease:

Money back guarantee on Legendary branded products.

The Legendary “Beck” horsehide vest was extremely well done.

Legendary isn’t going to hype a (currently) $928 dollar jacket on their front page and then deliver a sub par product that everyone returns.

The price is now USD $928 (full retail)

And the item number is 696HH

The item number leads me to believe this is a Schott jacket because other Legendary house brand jackets have item numbers like 1592 and 1524. Schott has the "600 series"

However, I do believe there were lots of administrative eff ups behind the scene. Most store owners have no idea how to input an item onto their web store. Some retailers don't want you to know who actually made the item in fear the customer might go to the source for better prices. Or this could just be a Schott OEM jacket without any Schott after sale support to hit a certain price point. So many things can happen. But I still bet my money on that this is in fact made in Schott factory or one of its affiliate workshops. I like to know all the dramas that went on behind the scenes...

I didn't buy this jacket because I am saving it for a 613 or two... But I would agree this 696HH is pretty nice jacket. No more D pocket for me. Classic perfecto styles from this point forward, or CHP...

Yeah the model number is what has me still thinking in the Schott direction.

Schott is just one (fairly small) factory, like Vanson. Super effective though! They're about an hour away from Legendary so at some level there would be a savings for them in terms of transport costs, since a truck or even van could probably transport direct.

I didn't buy this jacket because I am saving it for a 613 or two...

I've recommended the 613SH before many times, but Tom just ordered one and now it comes with the repro belt buckle by default! That's the 613 to get, with the beautiful thick horsehide. If you don't end up buying one by fall I can look for your size (probably same as mine) in the factory sale.

I’d say even worse than 5 Star. That looks like Hillside’s D- pocket.

I was looking at a 613UHT/UST (or 613S/SH) and a 618HH on the used market. I'm trying to get two used for the price of a new one...

Do not get the UHT/UST unless it’s from this year’s production. Until this year, it had a really bizarre sizing whereby the 42 or 44 had something like 20.5” PTP. This year, they now have the pattern of the 613S(H) so they are wearable.

The factory sale price for 613SH (if you found it on the racks) was $400; I didn’t buy it because I already own the jacket but I regret not doing so because I could have just passed it on to someone here for that + shipping.

Private label is the key word. They (Schott) don't want you to call them after sale about a Lengendary jacket that they made. Any problems call Lengendary that type of deal.

I’m wondering if the 689HH item number is just another leftover from the original Stallion advertisement (along with these pictures…albeit with a new label). As I mentioned, I saw a note from Jerri at Schott saying “we no longer make the Black Stallion for Legendary USA”. The supposed phone call to Legendary resulted in “we chose a different manufacturer this time”. That said, all parties could be trying to keep a private label arrangement…private. That’s not how someone with much more experience in these matters (than I have) took it, but the mystery will be revealed very soon when these start showing up.

So I think all of these points are sound but there’s one thing I did notice.

I considered the possibility of the 689HH being a holdover, but on old documentation (from both Schott and Legendary), the Stallion was 696H.

I note this difference because HH is a newer type of product designation from Schott; the current standard but horsehide Perfecto (618HH) and cafe racer (641HH) follow this format, whereas horsehide items that are older in the catalog like the 689H, (now discontinued) 1928H and 696H etc have a single H.

Now this could be a red herring as well; maybe they were originally going to do it with Schott, that was the product designation, then they switched to another supplier?

Just spitballing possibilities. I’d love to hear about (and see) the horsehide vest you got recently.

EDIT: Fixed Typo.

The model number of the Black Stallion is 696H. Scott's 689H is a different pattern, center zip, similar to the Vanson Enfield. Schott has used both H and HH suffixes to denote horsehide leather.

That was a typo on my part. If you see the next paragraph, I identify the jackets correctly. I was going to get a 689H myself.
