Leather Wallets - A pictorial review of my favourites

Greetings all

Thought I'd share my obsession of the last 7 years or so here, during which I've probably been through 40+ wallets. The craziness began with an alligator wallet I received as a gift. It was a beautiful wallet but I've since gone off alligator and crocodile because I prefer leathers that age more noticeably and favourably. Grade A Ostrich leather also looks very good, is tough and very comfortable in your pocket but like the other two it doesn't develop an attractive patina with age, rather it just stays the same. That's also true of bison. So far I have tried virtually every type of wallet leather (including alligator, crocodile, ostrich, bison, bridle, calf, stingray, elephant, horsehide and kangaroo) with the notable exception being shell cordovan.

In this review are pictures and details of the three that have survived my culls; my favourite three if you will.

Refreshingly, these are by no means the most expensive I have owned, but IMO they are certainly the best.

This one is the one I've had longest. It's in the style of a cricket ball and is made from the same leather - though don't ask me what that is. All I know is It's thick leather that has stood up remarkably well, in fact the thing feels indestructible, which if you take into account the demands that are made of an actual cricket ball is perhaps not altogether surprising. It has 6 card pockets in front of 2 utility pockets with one full length compartment for notes. The appeal of this wallet for me is that I am a huge cricket fan + I really do appreciate the depth and quality of this leather. It was a struggle to get good pictures that show it off, and in the end these are the best that I could do. This wallet was part of a run commissioned by an ex-player (or so I was told) and consequently it's no longer available. Note: a cheaper inferior variety is currently available, but this model is not.

This is the Siena wallet by Hugo Boss in brown kangaroo leather. The first picture is the true colour. Functionality wise this is the best I've ever come across. Without being baulky it comprises 10 card pockets in front of a further 4 utility pockets. Behind those there are two full length note compartments, and because of the way these have been fashioned this wallet is able to hold a thicker wad of notes than any other I've experienced. I think the design is first class and it's the only one here that can house £50 notes. I haven't used it so far but I gather that kangaroo is the strongest type of leather there is, which bodes well for it. In the flesh it is attractive in its current state, though how well this leather ages I am unable to report since I haven't yet used it. The cheapest place to get one is probably here:

This is my most recent acquisition. I've always though green would be a good colour for a wallet and I can report that the bridle leather used by Daines and Hathaway is very nice. As soon as you handle it you can feel that it's very good quality plus I consider that this dark shade of green (British racing green) is tastefully understated. It comprises 6 card pockets in front of 2 utility pockets with one full length note compartment. They're made in a factory in Walsall, England (i.e. outside of London) which may explain why the price is lower than some of the other bridle wallet manufacturers out there. I got it from here:

If I didn't have the Siena wallet I'd be very tempted by one of these which I imagine are also very nice:

As you can see none of these have coin pouches as I prefer wallets without. I usually keep my change in a pocket but on occasion I have used this.

I was attracted to it by its ugliness. Apparently (according to the ebay listing) it's Cuban and that head is a snake's, though I suspect it's more likely a bat's

Clearly the last thing I need is another wallet... but if yours is particularly nice I'd be interested to see your pictures!

All the best

looks like a tough old thing that probably could go on for a good while yet, though I totally understand why it's not in use. Cow hide I guess with hand tooling? Thanks for sharing!

Very nice! The only wallet I have is my Great-Grandfathers. I refuse to use it, as it has all of his items in it, so yeah.

That wallet triggered some vague memories in my 58 y.o. brain-I do believe I saw my grandpa with 1 of those. I do own a vintage wallet-not the in your back pocket kind of thing, but 1 of those longer single folds that I use at times when I slip it into the inside pocket of a suit coat or sport jacket. It's a tan colored tooled Morrocan leather wallet embossed with the phrase "Rabat Maroc." Earl

Threads like this are a big part of why I love the Fedora Lounge. I myself am not big into wallets, but I found your post interesting because of the passion you brought to it! Vive la difference!

My only wallet is likely not of interest to this thread by virtue of its utter drabness, but I find the cricket wallet quite striking indeed.

Have you ever used a wallet chain?

Nope. Presumably those are for people who worry about losing their wallet? Personally I like that concept about as much as I like coin pouches. FWIW, I have never lost a wallet or any money that's made it into my wallet. Though I did once draw out £120 from a cashpoint and forget to take it - which is a mistake I will surely only make once

I just picked up a new biker/trucker style wallet, thus I've started darkening the leather, rubbing coconut oil into it, and sunning it...She'll darken even more with use:

Note: I antiqued the US Morgan Silver Dollar concho too, using liver of sulfur gel

Nice!
My wallet was a gift from my wife five years ago:
IMG_3901.JPG

It has a photo of Scottsdale, AZ on it.
At first, I was hesitant to use is cuz it wasn't brown. Once I got over the fear, I started getting compliments everywhere I paid for something. Now I love it, and can't imagine not having it in my pocket for all the reasons- she said she bought it because my wallets were booring.
It's starting to wear out, but no worries...a year or so ago I set up an ebay search for this very reason. I got myself an identical one last month.
