I love that style too, can't wait to try it when I have longer hair!

I use Lottabody setting lotion. I mix it in a 2 to 1 ration in a little spray bottle. My hair is coarse and wavy and with this stuff and foam rollers overnight I have actually gotten too much curl. I haven't tried it with pin curls yet though, that's next on my learning curve!

When I use hot rollers or the curling iron, I used Proclaim Hot Thermal Styler and it also holds very well.

Both products were very affordable and Sally's has a good return policy if things don't work for you.

Does it hold curl with a wet set? And don't wash it for a couple of days before setting it, then sleep on the set.

Hot curlers probably are not enough.

Even the straightest hair will curl if you treat it badly enough!

Probably you'll get enough curl to put it up, if it was a do that hung free it would fall out, but I will bet that as it would be all pinned in place, it will hold for an evening.

But you seem to have curly hair in your avatar... what's the story?

Exactly what I would suggest. If your hair is long enough, It will be easy to comb the curl over your finger(s) and then pin in place. I would do this anyway if it were for myself. ;)

Actually, my hair is just twisted and kinda pushed in that pic. Wet set. Perms. Hot rollers... You name it... My hair will refuse to hold it.
But I think you're right... Being that it's an up do might help out some...

Hair spray and mouse are the only things I've ever used... I'm something of a novice when styling my own hair... I'm a brush and go kind of girl mostly.

I have naturally curly hair but I would also recommend setting lotion. I think the majority of us swear by it when styling with curls. I even use it when blow drying my hair out because it makes it look nicer.

My hair is stick straight and fine. It's NEVER held curl until I read about Lottabody in one of the forums. Every time I use it, my curls stay the entire day. I don't even have to use hair spray.

I have slightly wavy hair (depends on how much it's scrunched before air-drying), but it has a tough time holding a real curl when I use heat to set it. I haven't tried a genuine wet-set yet, but when I put my damp hair up into a bun, it will turn into waves when I pull it out at the end of the day. I recommend avoiding the heat and trying a wet-set with Lottabody, which comes highly recommended by the ladies here.

If your hair is particularly stubborn you might want to try Motions Foaming Wrap Lotion (Extra Hold), recommended in some other threads here. It's marketed for black hair but works for anyone. I get fine results from Lottabody, but incredibly long-lasting hold with Motions. The drawback is it smells quite a bit stronger than Lottabody--and I've got a fairly weak sense of smell, so it must truly stink to high heaven to someone more sensitive than me. The smell dissipates quickly, but it's pretty overpowering while you're putting your curls in. Yet another "beauty is pain" ritual, but one worth enduring if curls are important to you.

root66 does your hair get crunchy? i always have the fear anything "extra hold" will leave me hard and crunchy

It can be a bit crunchy when you first take your rollers or pins out...but a good brushing removes the crunch, miraculously without removing the curl. They also make a regular-hold variety, but I thought I'd go directly to the hard stuff.

Thanx for all the wonderful input ladies... Hopefully my wonderful husband will pick me up some this evening so I can style my hair nicely for tomorrow's get together.

i do an upsweep similar to this. It really isn't a terribly difficult look to achieve since you end up shaping the curls and pinning them down...so the set doesn't need to be much more than volume rather than extra percise.

I do my set, run a comb from ear to ear and pin that to the side just to hold it, bend from the waist and brush from the nape of the neck to the top. Secure the back of the hair with a wide barrette, pull the sides up with combs. At that point, you can just start forming curls and pinning them down.

Here's a pic... this is an end of the night shot tho!!

So I tried the Lottabody and it kinda worked... I got the stuff you don't have to cut and it likely would have turned out better if someone else had done my hair, but it held some curl on the ends. I did, however, have fantastic body. LOL
I guess I'm just destined for straitness.

So, i got my hair cut last Thursday in something akin to a page boy. i tried the Lottabody again last night, and i'm pleased. I still have curls underneath. The top stuff got brushed and styled, but it worked.
