LATE VICTORIAN EARLY EDWARDIAN (c. 1890 - 1930) SILVER PLATE SILVERWARE SET.
In its original case, and in excellent condition!
In its original case, and in excellent condition!
This is lovely! It was made in England between 1890 and 1920, judging by the style, metal marks, and presentation case.
It's a classic 12-piece formal silverware set (6 knives, six forks) originally designed for eating fish--now, of course, it could be used for anything. The metal is marked EPNS for electroplated nickel silver (silver plate on a nickel base). The knives have broad, fairly blunt blades, designed to cut and lift soft fish; the forks have tines suited to the same use.
This set is a classic example, with ornate metalwork on both the knives and forks, metal ferrules, and cream handles, which are likely a form of celluloid. The black presentation case with the blue lining--and the very nifty little device for keeping the forks in place!-- and brass fittings is also standard for this period.
The box has some minor wear to the edges, as shown, but overall this lovely item s in excellent condition!
(I suspect that these are absolutely hand-wash only in cooler water, because of the handles. So make sure you tell your scullery maid!)
Asking just $95, or offer, boxed, shipped, and insured in the USA.
