I am just about to finalize with Carrie at Thurston details for my 30's Half Belt.
For those who know - I am tentatively asking for heaviest Steer Hide available.
Good idea or not??

I love heavy leather, but I haven't tried on a 30s HB. I've owned several 50s HB and I liked them very well in mid weights. I think heavy leather benefits more from an action back or shoulder gussets. But those features aren't period accurate for a 30s jacket. Not sure what to tell you.

I am actually going with the shoulder gussets. Factors to consider.....

Any photos? Would love to know your chest and height. How does it fit ?
I don't have any fit pictures and frankly my pictures are not up to the standards of the Lounge. This is the jacket though.I am 6 feet 4 inches with a 44 inch chest. It's a great design and you wont be disappointed. The fit is close without a great deal of movement in the shoulders possibly because it is the heavy steer and the design does not have gussets. One of Aero's finest designs...I like the dip to the front.A very handsome jacket. If you want to get thrown through a pub/bar window this is the one to wear!

Unless you ride and want extra protection, go with the regular steer; it is plenty heavy, even for those of us who ride. Anything more is just unnecessary over building—and uncomfortable to wear. Not because of the weight, but because of the thickness of the hide and its unyielding nature. You might like it for a year or two, then realize what a chore it is to wear. Even cell phone use becomes uncomfortable after a few minutes. I find myself constantly swapping arms with the phone, and this is with both the heavy and the regular steer.

What size did you go with??

It is a nominal 44" size
The measurements are 23" pit to pit from seam to seam-total underarm width is 25"
The sleeve length is 26"
Shoulder width is 19.25"
Back length is 26.5"
Total width at the hem zipped is 22.75"

Thanks Bowden.
By "nominal 44" are you suggestion it was outside the typical size parameters?

I’ve got a sheene in their heavy steer, beautiful hide.
Juicy & thick, love it.
Do they actually offer anything that’s measurably heavier?
Or is this a similar request to ‘more grain’.

There is a slight variation in thickness from hide to hide and batch to batch, but generally, Aero offers only one CLX Steerhide in one thickness of roughly 3.5 oz. They used to have a thicker 4-4.5oz thickness steerhide, so you may occasionally stumble across an extra ordinarily heavy Steerhide jacket on the bay or the Classifieds. These jackets can be recognized by causing shoulder pain and weighing 10+ lbs. I have one of these, a size 36 HWM which weighs 9 lbs and is made of leather thicker than most of my boots.

The super heavy 4oz plus is unfortunately no longer an option. I asked about it when I was spec'ing my CR. I'm sure it was no fun for the machinists to sew up. Shame tho. Really magnificent stuff. Not hard to recognize either. Takes a shape and sheen all its own.
