Langlitz Leather Dressing

Have any of you used Langlitz's leather dressing? I believe it may have petroleum-based products in it, so I'm not sure how good that is for leather?

i use it on my langlitz, I doubt they would recommend it if it wasnt good. I'd say they know a thing or two about leather. Even pecard's contains petroleum distillates.

Does anyone know if Obenauf's contains petroleum distillates?

There is no mention of it in the listed ingredients. Just "Natural Preserving Oils, Beeswax and Propolis." I checked both the wax and the oil and saw no mention of petroleum distillates.

No, I was responding to your question about Obenauf's containing petroleum distillates; it does not. I use Obenauf's on my boots, but think it is a good idea to follow the recommendations of the experts on this forum to use Pecard on old jackets (but only when they are old and start to dry out).

Hi. I just read the Langlitz has Silicone in it. I don't think that's good to put on leather. Just my thought. Picards Petroleum is not like regular Petroleum.
Visit their site. I have had good results with Picards and Obenouf Oil.

I think the experts got that wrong. Ok to use on jackets that need to be conditioned period. Just used it on a Model B Comp Weight jacket 5 years old , not dried out and got excellent results. Great stuff !!

I bought some of the Langlitz dressing (for my 1990's "vintage" Langlitz jacket) and much prefer Lexol.

Silicone won't harm your leather jackets. It was just another lie that it will "clog up the pores" so the jacket "will not breathe" anymore and I can't believe I bought into it as well.

Right. There’s so much back and forth on this. I think the best advice is wait until your jacket or boots really need it, then use it sparingly. Whatever it is, it should be ok. The only thing that might have some real concerns is mink oil because it can turn rancid. But let’s be honest even on that, how much you use, how often you use it, and will you own your boots long enough for that to matter? People either wear them until they fall apart, or around here don’t wear them often enough, or own them long enough before selling/trading them away for most of this stuff to matter. Basically any other products should be fine when used only when necessary and used in small amounts. People have been using these products since leather has existed and if they were really as terrible as they say we wouldn’t have any jackets or boots left from the past because they would all be ruined or disintegrated. That’s not say to some products aren’t just better than others. That’s not to say some things might be a little different/safer but even then the difference is minuscule and tiny.

That's true on anything organic, though. I'd sooner use whatever than any organic solution as that stuff can basically restore the properties of the leather tanning tried to get rid of, which is to say, make it rot. Which is why I believe Silicone is a much harmless thing to be used on leather than some "secret family recipe" they're stuffing God knows what into.

What you say, it's best to just clean leather as often as possible and keep it properly stored, away from the elements, than to pour chemical solutions into it.

The reason there has been so much confusion about leather conditioners is that a marketing war has been going on. Makers (and their supporters) of all-natural conditioners will tell you that petroleum-based conditioners are harmful to leather fibers, while the opposite is often true. Some natural oils oxidize easier and the oxidation products will damage the fibers. Petroleum just pretty much sits there, lubricating the fibers, doing its job. I had good luck with Pecards, which is petroleum-based.

Just Bought this Vintage Leather Brown Jacket. Don't know who made it. I applied Pecards Brown Dressing. Because I wanted to recolor some wear spots.
