I think it's very unfortunate the story of the Women's Land Army is not better known here in the States -- we really didn't have any sort of equivalent program here, any sort of official "Agricultural Rosie" organization. All the more reason why commemorating their contribution to the war effort now is important -- stories not told are stories forgotten.

I'm going to move this thread into the WW2 forum -- hopefully it'll get more attention there!

Scott- if you like Rachel Weisz then you'll probably like the film;
"The Land Girls"

As well as the actual Land Girls, there was a branch of the Land Army involved in spotting useful trees in the English countryside, resources for the War effort. There was one such uniformed Lady in the episode of Foyle's War, entitled; "They Fought on the Land".
"The Timber Corps"- Members toured the country selecting growing trees as poles for telegraph poles and roadblocks, loaded down with paint-pot, callipers, billhooks and other tools of the trade."

This is great news, but i would ask why it took so long to honour these unsung heroines? my grandmother was rightly very proud of her service as a land girl throughout WW2. she was from liverpool and was posted to a farm in the cheshire countryside where she met and worked alongside the man who would become my grandfather. being a city girl, learning to milk cows the good old-fashioned way and driving a tractor were something of a culture shock, but she had nothing but happy memories and a sense that she had 'done her bit'. she passed away in 1991, but her brown land army woolen coat and yellow armband are among my most treasured possessions.

It's great yes, but also sad, because they waited too long to recognise these amazing women as many of them have now passed away. We had the equivalent here in Australia - the Women's Land Army - AWLA. I love the Aussie poster below showing all the WW2 jobs available for women at the time.

As well as the AWLA there was the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF), Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS), Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS), The Royal Australian Army Nursing Service (RAAFNS), Royal Australian Women's Army Corps (WRAAC).

My mother was in the Canadian version of the "Land Army". They sent her to the Okanagan to pick fruit. She had the best time of her young life.:)
