Ladies.. HELP!!! My 16 yr old daughter wants to attend formal in WWII style!!!

My 16yr old daughter is going to the ROTC formal with her boyfriend.

He has to wear his dress uniform of course and she has to wear a prom type dress. ( Prom dresses are ridiculously “sexy” these days and way too much skin for 16-17 yr olds to be had……..but it is the current style.)

When out looking at dresses I made the passing comment that it would be cool if she dressed like one of the Gals that would accompany the GI’s to their USO dances during WWII. I thought that women were Sexy with out the sex. In other words….. beautiful and attractive without having their butts hanging out of their dresses!

Well, she LOVED this idea! And in fact, all of here friends dates are going with the 1940’s motif.

So I need your help and advice as to what hairstyle (here hair is to the middle of her back) and ACCESSORIES that a lady of WWII would have had on her during a date. This would mean hair clips, purse, necklaces, bracelets, etc. We have a couple of great vintage stores in DFW but we want to have an idea of a certain “look” before we go shopping this weekend.

Please help me to help her!!!

Also have a look at the threads in the Powder Room for 1940s style. There are lots of them and it will help you get an idea of what sort of dress/accessories you might like, as well as what is period and 'correct'.

As a shortcut, a long dress with either short or cap sleeves and a sweetheart neckline would be very 40s - and suitable for a teenager.

Yes we tried google search. But what is the point of being a member of fourms such as this if not for tapping the expertise of others (as well as adding your own where you can). So I was hoping to add some of the members knowledge to pics and ideas we have found on our own.

We had an absolute BLAST looking through the powder room. It has given us some good ideas. But the powder room is kind of all of the place EVENT wise. So that is why I asked for help for this specific era and specificaly dances in a thread of its own.

It lets her know that there are good folks out there who practice the art of vintage dress.

Isn't that the point of doing a Google search (of the site)? Did you try the link I posted, which was specific to proms?

I think a fluffy, tea-length halter-top repro vintage-style dress like Unique Vintage has a ton of could be very cute, especially with a crinoline under it. Is she tall? I love tea-length skirts for this look.

With a wrap/bolero/capelet, and little gloves, it could look great. I would keep the jewelry pretty simple, a simple pearl or bead necklace. But then, I'm not very big into jewelry and she may be.

If fluffy is too '50s, well, a pencil skirt suit could look very smart, and even a wiggle dress is covered by the standards of what girls wear to prom nowadays.

Maybe try these websites? They are retro inspired dresses. They are really cute and I think could work for a formal and achieve the vintage look your daughter is going for. I think that Stop Staring makes some really nice dresses, and they have a lot to choose from.

Good luck on your search, and I hope she has a great time at the dance! :)
