Knox Duplex

I just got in the strangest hat I have ever seen---but I like it. :p I have no idea what the weave is because it is unlike anything I have seen. The top of the hat is straw but the underside of the brim is felt. It is labeled Duplex at the front of the hat on the sweatband. The side of the sweat is labeled Knox Superfine "Highest Awards World's Fair. When I saw it I had to have it even thoguh it has a telescope top that is only 4" tall.
Here are a few photos:

I really am not sure when it was produced or where it was actually woven but it fits ok so it is a keeper. ;)

Verrry interesting, but strange! That weave looks very tight. what about that other one you bought JP? Did you get it yet?

Yeah, I got the other one as well. It has a one of a kind vent pattern on one side of it in the shape of a star. A few people have said it looks like a Texas Ranger hat. I will have to get pictures up of that one too. The brim is huge and I like it that way. :p

Hi-
does the felt portion- the brim lining finish under the sweat band?
Is this the meaning of 'Duplex' here? Two layers?

Yes, it finishes under the sweatband. I think that is how it is held in place---that and it is rolled over the top of the brim and sewn in place as well.
I think Duplex just means two types of material in one. I had no idea why they would add felt to the bottom of the straw but it does sound like a good idea when I think about it. The felt makes the brim stiffer and it will not flip up in the wind. It also gives you more shade in the sun because the minute "holes" in the weave do let a little sun through. With felt ont he brim---problem solved. :p
It is indeed the strangest felt I have seen. I need to get some pictures up of the whole hat and the logo on the sweatband. The logo is making me believe that it is even older than I thought because it is accompanied by a few art deco angels and a globe. These were used in the 1915 World's Fair out here anyway. hmmm...

a bump for one of the strangest hats on the Lounge

Hey James, is it dry enough yet? ;)

There is a very sad tale that goes along with that hat. You really don't want to see a side view now. :eusa_doh:
It had a few boxes fall on it during my last move. It did not fair well. It was very brittle and just about exploded. :( I put it all back together with glue but you can tell I fixed it. That hat is now simply an example.
It has the underside of the brim reinforced with felt so nothing was hurt there. I'll have to dig it out and see how bad it is. I haven't looked at it in a while due to it completely disgusting me over my carelessness. :rage:

Not really. I am over the loss of it as a wearable piece but it is still worth looking at every once in a while.
Personally, I like my two tone green Knox better though. :D
You could use it to light that Culebra.:p
