I guess I'm lame. [huh]

I wear a Timex most days. Replaced the leather strap a few months ago - the strap itself cost 1/2 as much as the watch, which should indicate something of costs here.

For formal occasions, I can choose from a dual-tone Bulova or a gold Bulova. The dual-tone was my grandfather's, and worth about three day's pay. I purchased the gold one at a great discount when our local Kay Jewlers went out of business. I think it's retail price was less than most bicycles. I've always thought vintage Bulovas, and even some modern ones, looked quite nice while remaining practical and affordable.

Some day, I'd like to end up with a self-winding, non-battery watch. But who's got money for that? I'd rather spend that money on a nice night out for the Mrs. The memories can't be stolen, and I know she'd appreciate it more.

(Anyone ever been to Murray's in downtown Minneapolis for the Silver Butterknife Steak dinner? Well worth it, and much tastier than a 17 jewel watch. )

Yeah, I hear ya. And to prove your point this one just appeared on my radar. It's a Marathon GSAR automatic dive watch ($918). The Canadian-based Marathon supplies watches to both the US and Canadian militaries. I'm putting together a display of Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom militaria and would love to include some military-issue watches. Much sought after is the "sterile" version which doesn't have "U.S. Government" on the dial.

Sounds like pretty standard Trolling to me … I suspect if someone expressed that opinion about people showing their vintage suits/hats they'd be shown the door here too.

Was expressing my opinion on the whimpy,desk jockey Rolex wearing snobs on a watch forum,the thread was what Rolex do you wear while driving your car(what a joke),many of the pic`s were young spoiled kids with their arms hanging out of their Porsches,BMWs,etc,sporting 9,000.00 Rolex watches!!!Give me a break,what a bunch of self centered human beings we have in this country.When I bought my first Rolex 41 years ago I had to wait for 2 pay checks to buy it,and it was only $60.00 USED!.Back then it was just a good durable wrist watch,not some symble of wealth,status or what have you..I guess it raised the hackles on these people.Oh well I guess I am getting to old to tolerate this behavior......

I have 5 automatic watches that I have paid under $15 each for. I even had a couple of them that the people selling them thought that they needed batteries. Look in boxes of quartz watches in thrift stores and antique/junk shops, myou might find an occasional mechanical watch. A lot of nice watches fly under the radar.

What every the subject matter a forum is only as goes as the people who run it.

I was told that the military wrist watches are made for Marathon in Switzerland by Tudor, which I believe to be a subsidiary of Rolex.

The thing I ever understood (and I've seen it at least once on most forums which I have followed) are those people who decided they don't like the forum any longer, and so go out of their way to get banned, or who make a big how of flouncing off, rather than just simply no longer bothering to post there. [huh]

The majority of my watches (I have about a dozen, now all mechanical) are Chinese fakes. I'll maybe replace some of those with something better as they die off, but for now they all do the job. Couldn't even tell yuo what brand half of them are ripping off - my favourites are labelled..... Piaget, I think - never heard of it. All were bought by design rather than brand. Well, except my first, as buying a fqke Rolex in China is something of a rite of passage. It's my least favourite. Too many knobs (more than one).

I don't mind paying a fair amount (it's all relative - for me a couple of hundred dollars on a daily wear watch would be quite a lot indeed) for a good watch, but I object to paying jewellery prices for the most part. The biggest problem I find with watches is that unless you go either very cheap or crazy expensive it's hard to find one as simple as I like. Quartz and digital are deal breakers. If it has more than a single knob (for setting the hands, obviously), I'm not interested. I don't even particularly care for a date window, but it is very hard to find a watch without one. Most expensive watches, unless you go to a crazy level of expense, are these days crammed with extra bells and whistles that just don't appeal to me whatever. Seems to be even more the case in anything with a goldtone finish.

Most of the classic American brands switched to being Chinese made before closing down and reintroduced as Chinese brands under license. Elgin springs to mind right away.

The Chinese have went beyond making knock offs of Rolex and other iconic brands and now have their own made up "Swiss" brands.

Could be some one of those then. FWIW, the ones I've never heard of are markedly better watches than the copies of the big names.

Most of my Chinese watches have been great timekeepers. Any real failing has been cosmetic ("gold" plating rubbing off, or leather strap failing - usually the keeper loop stretching), though no worse than watches I've had made anywhere else, at higher prices. [huh]

I bought a Rolex Sea Dweller about 15 years ago and almost never take it off. Its an OK dive watch and can take high humidity. Back to the OP and his original point, cant imagine writing in to a website to flaunt it especially with a question about which Rolex I wear when driving my 76 British Land Rover in olive drab which looks like it was painted with a brush. Probably not the image that crowd was looking for.

As I think about it the sites like that are a good thing. "Bling" watch guys can post there and the horology forums can concentrate on the timepieces that they are interested in. Kind of like the hipsters posting which shopping mall stores have the best prices on the hat style of the week on their forums rather than here.

I have a Citizen only because I got it for $85 after Christmas 6yrs ago at Sears. Prior to Christmas it was $285. Uh no thank you...
The only reason I got it was because it had a blue face and I thought it was really nice looking.
I have 2 Seiko's from the 80's that gave out, one unforunately has the Interstate Batteries logo on it, commemorating the "Great Race" of antique cars.
I've found a site that advertises estate jewelry including watches called Ross Simmons. Not sure if they are worth what the company is asking, but then again I'm not sure I need a watch.
I look at it this way. I have a clock in my office car, a clock on my computer at work, 2 phones with clocks on them, and several at home. Why would I need one on my arm too? Unless I find a green faced watch that I really want, then I may be forced to get it.
