I'd say no - wearing trousers and shirt that are a close match in color and weave screams "uniform" as in tradesman, deliveryman, etc. Go for some contrast in color and tonality.

Honestly, it's the khaki shirt that's generally the problem. Wear it with khaki pants, and you get the various comments above. Pair it with green pants, you look like a park ranger, pair it with brown pants (like I did today, unfortunately) and you look like a sheriff's deputy (which was the comment I got). I stopped wearing one with green pants after I stopped by our public affairs office, and was asked why I was wearing a park ranger's uniform. Doesn't help that Joshua Tree NP is in the same town.

I'm convinced that the only way to really pull off a khaki shirt is with navy or grey pants, or maybe black. I think the associations with khaki shirts are just too strong in people's minds. This coming from a guy, mind you, that would dress like Robert Redford in Out of Africa everyday, if I thought I could pull it off!

You see...-some- folks can get away with it...due to where they are and what they do.

but for say running to your local Target or Walmart...or the bank to make a deposit....yea...way too 'I am trying too hard to look adventuresome'.....

Rather like people who wear sports gear around town...but never -do- sports ;)

Hmmm...I don't know Denise. An expedition to Walmart can be quite the adventure. Just the thought of braving all those swarms of shoppers, shrieking kids, and jungles of cheap clothing makes me want to break out the khakis & pith helmet. lol

I'd have to agree, there have been times when I have been forced to go to the Mall of America (for which they tore down a perfectly good outdoor football stadium) when I have felt that full safari gear was in order, as it is a trying, torturous, and dangerous place. At least for me.

My boss says she's seen women fighting over stuff at Wal-Mart. Adventure, indeed.

Depends on how you do it, I'd say. I wear all khaki all the time, but I also accessorize it with brown Oxfords, A-2 and aviatorish-looking shades along with usually maintaining a very "military" attitude and posture.

ShoreRoadLady, are you sure we're not long-lost siblings?;)

Maybe a long-lost black sheep cousin or something? lol Your version of khaki sounds way better than my olive atrocity...I think I wore that combination maybe twice!

Not to mention dinner at the Odyssey Cafe, which I understand is now closed. Pity. The bar alone was worth the trip, and eating in Machu Picchu or the Serengeti was always a treat. Next to the Elephant Bar, it's one of the few places where a pith helmet seems appropriate, outside of Africa proper, I suppose!

Of course, taking the fact that I've also styled myself as "a Mini-Me version of MacArthur" (even though I significantly outweigh him and am much more robustly-proportioned in spite of the six-inch height differential) helps to take into account... yes, I even carry a corncob pipe! (And when stressed, you'll find it clamped between my teeth even in spite of being unloaded...)

All about the accessories and the trim, dear young lady...;) As for your description, do we ever get to see a pic?;)

MallWart expedition? I'd want an elephant-gun and a Howdah myself... what time I'm forced to spend in those horrid places is usually marked by hours of planning the most efficient route from door to Objective A to Objective Z to the cashier, followed by dashing in, getting the objective purchased and dashing out as fast as my overmuscled legs will carry me.

Helpful hint: if you can check out in Sporting Goods or the Garden Center, depending on the area that will cut down on dealing with the lines upfront.

Yikes. We've got a national political convention coming to Denver in August. Thousands of politicians...and thousands of demonstrators too. Could make venturing into Walmart seem tame. Hmmm Shall I venture downtown in khakis & pith helmet? :D

Do what the wife says and don't do it. You'll be in no danger of looking silly and you'll keep the better half happy. A win both ways!

Ha! Fortunately, there is no photographic evidence with which I could be blackmailed. :p
Blackmail? Who said anything about blackmail? We do tend to be our own worst critics, doubly so your half of the species;), and I really doubt it was as bad as you make it out to be... (Besides, maybe I'm trying to draw you out a little...;) can you blame a guy for trying?)

During the 30's and 40's and probably before and after, Williamson - Dickies Company (now just Dickies, I think) sold matching khaki pants and shirts. I think they came as a set. There were probably other manufacturers as well. Mostly, those were worn by working men in some trade. Also, often farmers and ranchers wore those matching sets. My grandfather, who was a rancher, sometimes wore matching khaki shirts and pants, always freshly washed, starched and ironed.

I personally think khaki shirts look great with levis and I sometimes wear that combination, usually with boots.

I can't remember for sure, but I think Williamson-Dickies Company was a very large contractor during WWII for the U. S. Army uniforms. Summer uniform was matching khaki shirts and pants. tan webb belt, brass buckle and black tie. May have been a brown tie in the 40's. In the 50's when I was in the Army, tie was black.
