i think if he removed the belt it would greatly improve the outfit.
the braces are high contrast with the shirt, but go with the hat and tie.
the belt visually rhymes with the hat band but is just one step too far.

My mom and I just watched this the other night and we were talking about that guy and his outfit. My mom said he look over accessorized. lol But man, those spectators were killer, I told my mom I have to get a pair. (the ladies' version of course)
Women's Spectators are sharp. Excellent! I am pretty sure Daisy has a pair. Post a pic when you get them. ;)

This is an excellent film. My favoritie Bogart film. I really like the character he plays; a loner, walking about the country, not bothering anyone, minding his own business, but trouble seems to find him. Even when he is piloting the boat to Cuba, he reluctantly commandeers it. Action packed without the action. Wasn't Lauren Bacall something like 20 years old in this film? [huh]

That is not a "western belt". It is a classic dress belt, with silver tip end.

It appears that he's wearing a three piece sterling buckle set with a tooled, tapered strap. Similar to this rig.

Compare it with this photo.

Yep it looks western to me now.

Good Eyesight my friend. I didn't see the detail. I certainly will concede that this is a "western" look. I do remember seeing Bogart's belt in either Big Sleep or the Maltese Falcon... and it was the silver tipped, but plain design, tapered belt.

I love it. I saw it at the Johnston and Murphy's store, and they were going for about $90. My internet links / search posted above show you can get a very similar belt for about $20 on sale.

Very classy.

I have always loved this film.

This is the clothing era I like best.

It is kind of at the extreme. Lapels were Wiiiiiide, Shoulders were wiiide and brims were wiiiide.

I can dig it!

Yes, how times have changed, she was merely 20 years old when she got started, yet had far more class and substance. Compare her to Brittney Spears, Lindsay Lohan or the other modern waifs of her age and there is no comparison. Compare her in her 40's to the modern tramps like Madonna, Cher etc; still can't be done.

Yeah, I agree it's a great movie, especially for us loungers in love with the era.

What's not to like about the movie? Great script and story, wonderful acting from the stars and the supporting cast, wonderful 40s style.

I never get tired of watching this one.

I adore Bogart. He is in so many fantastic flicks. I love Dark Passage,
Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Marked Woman....etc...I know it's a good
film if he is in it.
I think Passage to Marseille was one of his best, though it is usually only one of his semi-known films. I guess too much of it was set in a swamp to have broad appeal! No great clothes to discuss! lol

It's funny that his posting comes up cos I was just watching this film again the other day and was struck by the guy in the braces "Toots" was the name I think they refered to him as.....he looks exactly like my good buddy Benny Holiday...it was a bit strange to see him alongside Edward G Robinson!

She actually has a reputation of being quite surly.

Several years ago I witnessed LB throw a world class hissy-fitt in the lobby of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. When I relayed the story to some Hollywood friends they confirmed that she was a very difficult and abusive person, especially with underlings.[huh]

He looks like me? (Or I look like him?) Now I'm gonna feel sorry for him every time I watch this movie. :(
