In the modern factory the problem is no longer labor. The major cost per unit is in the capital expenditures such as lasts, dies, injection molding molds and plant and equipment. A shoe industry consultant I know told me about a factory in china with 10,000 employees acres upon acres under roof, dormitories for the workers and in house machine, last, die and mold making shops. With style changes a shoe factory like this undergoes a constant major re-tooling operation. With out government subsidies govt provided health care, govt. run unions, subsidised energy and transportation it is no wonder that China produces 90% of the worlds footwear.:eusa_doh:

J&M

I have a pair from the 1940s that I was ab;e to stretch to fit. Original in every aspect mad eup for the famous Desmonds store in LA. They look very similar to the middle ones in the set of three in the film noir hyperlink and I wonder now whether they are 'handmades'. Does it have to say 'handmade' anywhere to be a true 'handmade'?

Hmmm... I just wish we made shoes as well here as they are made overseas. Both Alden and Allen Edmonds seam to have a huge problem getting their heels to match in size and shape when you compare a pair of shoes. Go ahead, flip a pair of Allen Edmonds over and see the discrepancy in the cut of the heels. That doesn't occur with English brands.

After 17 years or so of making shoes I can tell you that you have hit on one of the most difficult of shoe making tasks. Try sanding a pair of 2 inch cowboy boot heels, The first ones I did came out perfectly matched but by then they were so small that I had to rip them off and start over.

I have only two pairs of J&M, and I love them. Granted, they're casual styles, but they fit better than any shoes I have ever owned. The only problem that they seem to have is, oddly enough, the laces that come with them; they always break within 1 week, then when I buy a replacement pair, they're just fine.[huh] I don't get it. Would they do that just to get you back into the store? From now on, I'll just buy the replacements when I buy the shoes, or buy loafers. :p

An internationally curiosity, they always sell their best stuff overseas.

And in the US we get, from what I have seen on the shelves and on the internet, a definitely lower end of their line of shoes.

For what it's worth, I think these J&M Mixon Tassels are beautiful shoes!

I just wish they sold something near the construction of those wingtips here

They sure look nice, but I don't think I know enough about shoe construction to really know what to look for. I'm very happy with the J&M shoes that I have, but what should one look for in a high quality shoe? [huh]

J & M Shoes at Dillards

There I was walking through the shoe department in Dillards when I spotted a black and white pair of J & M wingtip shoes. Price was $165.00 if I recall correctly. I didn't try them on. I had not seen shoes like that in a store in a long time. I looked on their website and of course they aren't listed there. But I saw them in person.

What J&M are making their B&W spectator again? This must be in response to the demise of the AE Broadstreet.[huh]
