Not entirely sure if this is relevant, interesting or even desirable in FL (Forgive me if not - I am new here!)

There has just been an extended interview with Messrs Depp & Burton on Jonathon Ross tonight - a good 15 -20 minutes slot.

Johnny Depp was sporting a Fedora of some kind - high crown, very high at the front with what looked like some sort of telescope centre crease and nose pinch (or I could be complely wrong and used those terms totally incorrectly - I am on the nursery slopes of the leaning curve here!). It seemed to have puncture holes/damage at the front tip of the crown.

He was also wearing what looked like vintage style jeans - a dark denim loose cut with white stitching - again I could be wrong - just trying to relate what I observed without really knowing the right vocabularly.

His shirt was worn open at the collar and overlaying the jacket collar and loose at the waist - styled with what might have been a cravat/ascot worn loose around the neck over the shirt and not tucked up to the neck.

His jacket was an interesting brown/honey gold large check of some description - hard to tell on the screen. He had interesting costume jewellery, spectacles and hair styling.

All in all quite an interesting look - not sure if this is good or bad from the perspective of other Loungers but I anticipate a rise in interest in hats, dark straight cut jeans and cravats, vintage jackets etc here in the UK!

I am not really a regular reader of Entertainment mags, Heat or others such things - is Johnny Depp known for vintage style or is it a new look for him?

Is this good or bad for forum members - I imagine Ebay bidding might become more hectic for certain pieces in the immediate future ....

But I could be totally wrong! Any thoughts from any one else?

Be like Johhny....

I am amazed anyone would spend any time caring what Depp wears. There is so much more out there then Hollywood personalities who have done nothing but make movies.

I was simply noting the fact that he was on British prime time TV on perhaps the most viewed show on our TV for about 20 minutes (when most A-listers get about 10 minutes max) and he was dressed in a decidely vintage style, which seems relevant to this online community - whether or not it is good or bad for Loungers is the opinion I was looking for as a topic of discussion.

That doesn't mean I want to 'be like Johnny' (although there are worse ways to look!) but I do know that popular culture in the UK is heavily influenced by such celebs and TV like Jonathon Ross (reputedly the highest paid TV talent in Europe) - so when someone like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton (who is revered over here) turn up on our mainstream shows dressed in Fedora's, vintage jeans, shoes and cravats - it almost certainly follows that the Sunday style supplements will be touting this as the new black ..... and for some that might be a good thing and for others, not so good... I fully expect a surge of interest and bidding on vintage fedora's in the UK in next few weeks.

My opinion is that it is probably good for those who love love the look and want to spread the word, good for vendors and collectors who want to sell some pieces right now but bad for collectors looking for bargains in the short term... but I could be hopelessly wrong.

I was wondering if vintage clothes vendors do experience interest and sales surges after celeb appearances in vintage or not?

I'm amazed, too.
Most people who thought this way, would probably keep it to themselves.:p

...and...

"... Hollywood personalities who have done nothing but make movies."

Here you go again with this line...

Amazing.

This is website where we appreciate vintage style. If an actor shows interest in vintage fedoras (or cars, airplanes, furniture, etc.) why wouldn't we discuss it?

Who cares if he "does nothing but make movies"? Without golden era film, many of us wouldn't have references to re-create the styles that we do. And we all need entertainment, without actors we wouldn't have great movies to take our minds off the general drudgery and seriousness that modern life and work can be.

I think he can be a very snappy dresser, but I also think that he makes a lot of mistakes, bless him.

Speedbird, I understand what you are saying and quite frankly I like a lot of the work that Depp does and he does seem to be a snappy dresser. My point was that I see a lot of people who copy pop star personalities wardrobes (and sometimes thoughts) rather then spend the time to develop their own.

This forum is great and I have no problem with folks that dissagree with me.

is vintage becoming more desirable but consequently more inaccessible...

Hi Burton, I didn't particularly take offence at your comment but I did feel your post was a little dismissive of my original question. Never mind, it has caused some reaction but I never intended to create a hullaballoo. As yet no one has answered the original question - my fault as I used the context of a movie star wearing vintage very visibly to popular culture as a way to introduce the question

I will try it a different way - whilst not an expert as so many members are in this forum, I have always had a fascination with vintage clothing of one kind or other. When I was a teenager I used to mix and match my wardrobe with items found in small sole trader shops and stalls, and whilst I was considered a little 'eccentric' it really wasn't that big a deal. However, living and working in London in my adult life I have watched vintage stores explode, both figuratively and literally - through boom and bust. I have seen the Camden Stables Market change beyond recognition and become threatened with extinction, and yet at the same time prices and interest have soared. The really odd thing is, as vintage has become more desirable and aroused more interest, the more exclusive and 'odd' it seems to have become in normal life - 20 years ago I walked into a club wearing a Fed and it was noticed but not that odd - now it would seem like I came from another planet! (unless it was some hip hop r 'n' b joint in Brixton where I would be so out of place I might as well be from Mars!)

So what has happened here? Times and taste change, that's a given but why such an increase in interest and yet a general reluctance for it to seem everyday - how did it become niche when it was pretty much commonplace two decades ago? When espoused by an A-lister as a cool style does it become less accessible and therefore more eccentric to the average person?
Or does it become more sought after?

of course the answer is obvious...

.. it is a function of supply and demand ... the interest increases, the available stock decreases. Prices rise, and consequently accessibility falls. An A-lister wears it - makes it cool, demand spikes - supply fails ... word on the street is so what? that was so last year anyway .... and anyone left wearing the look is labelled as a 'wannabe Jonnny X' ..... q.e.d. it would be better for us if vintage clothing admirers were left alone as curious eccentrics and ignored, especially by celebs!

That's my opinion!

Speedbird, some really great thoughts and I think you are delving into some deep stuff with your analysis of fashion, supply and demand and impacts of "A" listers wearing certain things. As I only wear vintage safari type clothing I have no experience or qualifications to assess such questions but for me I always hope to god that safari fashion does not come back into vogue (which it does seem to do every few years). It seems in todays society the reality is that your today "in" and cool look will soon be an "out" and very uncool look.
