I recently sold a Langlitz jacket through ebay and just received this measage

"We are writing to inform you that your recent transaction sold through the Global Shipping Program to [jsjy_jp_hldkesay] cannot be completed.

The item in question has been deemed restricted. This could be due to import/shipping restrictions or eligibility requirements within the Global Shipping Program. The item will not be shipped forward to its final destination and will not be returned to you.

Don’t worry! Your buyer will be notified and refunded automatically by eBay within 72 hours. You will retain the buyer’s original payment. At this time, the transaction is considered complete, and no further action is needed."

Anyone else with a similar experience? The last Langlitz I sold went to Japan about 18 years ago no issue but I shipped myself

So you got to keep the money, the Buyer was refunded, Japanese authorities seized the jacket? weird but I guess everyone made out ok.. including the guys in customs who are wearing a new jacket paid for by the government.

I don't see any import restrictions on leather jackets unless it is made with skins of some endangered species.
There are a few possibilities
that the buyer was caught by the custom and refused to pay the import tariff and consumption tax (i.e. he might have been hit by a 20% tariff + 10% tax);
http://www.customs.go.jp/english/c-answer_e/imtsukan/1204_e.htm
that the global shipping system like FedEx deems those items prohibited to avoid hassles (yes FedEx actually listed leather goods, shoes and CDs as prohibited items which at least as far as I know are not prohibited per se by Japanese regulations given the Japanese Customs page above). https://crossborder.fedex.com/us/assets/prohibited-restricted/japan/index.shtml

To be clear, are they returning the money to the buyer and taking it from your account, and not returning the jacket to you?

I hate the Global Shipping Program, and never use it when I'm buying. As a seller, I just don't ship internationally, period, because I don't want the hassle of a potential problem.

Thing is, you could have a problem with a buyer around the corner. I've shipped to buyers across the globe, including yourself, without major issue on the whole; thanks again for your contribution to that ;-)

Sure, you can, but I've always felt more comfortable and secure about not having to deal with international issues. Maybe it's better these days, my last incident with an unhappy buyer was much, much easier to resolve than it used to be years ago. But even so, anything I've bought that was shipped to me by GSP was a month or two, while anything I've had mailed directly to me has been 2-10 days.

Or the global shipping simply lost the package and refunded the buyer with no admission of guilt/fault.

eBay global shipping program looks to be highly overpriced and quite unreliable shipping option, moreover - seems it might often cause some excessive high tax fees for a buyer, not to say it's too much fuss for a buyer, too much hassle for a buyer just to get a well purchased item, isn't it? It's been discussed many times over here on TFL board.
Usual USPS international shipping from the US works perfectly great instead, as is any other standard international shipping from many other countries via their national postal services. Why not to just use USPS from the US in the abovementioned case, as usual?
That's great if eBay GSP might compensate costs for both sides - buyers and sellers - for undelivered items, but what about those undelivered items? When any people purchase any items, they expect to get it delivered well finally, and they evidently don't expect to get just their costs back instead.

eBay GSP is slower (more steps involved) but I don’t find it bad as a buyer to know custom fees in advance and as a seller knowing that I’m only responsible only for shipping to the depot in my country.

Global shipping is *fugged* and that's the end of it really. It COSTS more and TAKES longer ? What is it with that ?

I still occasionally buy used stuff on ebay and the seller does not always seem to HAVE to use Global shipping

I always ask to send themselves USPS ( or the equivalent !) and NEVER a problem if they do ( to Australia at least !).

Some sellers will not budge on the post type and a sale to me does not proceed thereafter.

Apologies if this is a thread hijack , but it looked like it was going that way anyways...

It doesn’t cost more... the custom fees are in it. You may prefer to paying them later but other might prefer to know with certainty when they buy.

Plus there are buyers who struggle to understand that importing goods from other countries might mean they have to pay taxes. Some people are hard as rocks and they can’t fathom that blaming the seller for hidden costs. There is nothing hidden really.

Certainly they can improve the speed of the process I’m not arguing that but that it costs more, I just can’t see it.

Sorry old mate but in regards to shipping to Australia it DOES cost more !

Both the "shipping cost" as a standalone and of course ebay/paypal now collect 10% tax for the Aussie gumbinment

I have bought several used jackets from the forum here and I am acutely aware of the post cost+ 10%GST difference !

For a seller in say for example the US , they still have to go to their local PO and hand in the parcel.

Exactly the same for them whether it comes USPS airmail direct to Australia OR to Kansas or wherever ebay/paypal reroute

Indeed for many Moons I stopped buying ebay/paypal and dealt direct on the forum. Bit of trust here y'see

There is another fairly rcent thread that goes over this scenario , I will try to attach a link

Example:

Buying a pair of Levi’s 501 shrink to fit from US to UK with GSP:

- price of the item: $49.99 -> £38.85
- shipping to UK: $14.15 -> £11 (could be cheaper? Maybe but it looks fair to me for a tracker service, yes tracking is a mess though)

- import charges: $17.37 -> £13.50

Total expense: £62.85

Now I want to go USPS:

This will be taken over by Parcel Force UK which means I’ll have to pay to them the import charges (22.5% of price of the item + shipping = ~£12 rough calculation) and £12 fixed handling charge.

Total expense: ~£73.35

To me GSP prices are fair and they don’t deserve complaints. As I said, yes they could deliver quicker. Bear in mind that customs take their time too.

Here is a straight lift from one of my posts in that ebay thread

Watching 2 jackets in the US. Both café racers , one Vanson and one Schott

The Vanson is

Shipping:
$60.43 International Priority Shipping to Australia via the Global Shipping Program help icon for Shipping - opens a layer
This amount includes seller specified US shipping charges as well as applicable international shipping, handling, and other fees. This amount is subject to change until you make payment. For additional information, see the Global Shipping Program

The Schott is

Shipping:
$35.00 USPS First Class Mail International / First Class Package International Service | See details

Yeah "Global shipping" is to 'help' buyers AND sellers !

Clear as a bell mate. Those are straight lifts from ebay listed items for sale. ( I bought both jackets !)

For reasons unknown to me some US sellers can list and state USPS airmail post quotes and some can't or won't.

they are then "Auto calculated" using Global Shipping Programme.

If the guy sends USPS then by default the post cost is less.

What may differ is that Australia Post take over from USPS here , not the third party carrier as you describe
