J. Peterman Counterfeit Mailbag

So, I finally got a counterfeit mailbag from J. Peterman via E-Bay for about 50% of what the catalog was asking. I have done a brief search and I don't see a dedicated entry to this bag, so I was wondering what other owners of it think? What are your likes and dislikes?

My bag just arrived last night so I am still getting a feel of it. So far, I must admit that I am not fond of the short "shoulder strap". Yes, I get the idea that it is supposed to be a shoulder strap and not an across the body strap. The problem is I am a big guy, not giant, but fair sized and I don't find this strap too comfortable as of yet. I am going to check the web for an alternative or head over to Tandy Leather and maybe create my own solution.

Let me know your opinions on this bag.

Cheers,

Scott

It looks a lot like a bag from Saddleback Leather.

When I first read your post, I thought you got a fake J Peterman bag. But I think you mean it's a J Peterman bag that imitates a mailbag, correct?

J. O'Hurley Company

Just as an aside:
Maybe you didn't know... maybe you did...
I think it's pretty interesting that John O'Hurley, the actor who played "the fictitious J. Peterman" in Seinfeld
(when the company was out of business)
actually funded the re-launch of the actual J. Peterman Company!

You have J. O'Hurley to thank.
As well as saving the company, I think he surely added to the company's "mystique",
through his off-beat portrayal on Seinfeld.

G'Day SKBELLIS...I've got one as well and love the back... Live in Australia so had to have the ebayer ship it down... but was essentially new when I got it about a year ago. I reckon the short strap did not appeal to the original owner either. Just imagine what the old letter carriers in the USPS did when these bags were the norm... remember them from when I was a kid in Atlanta. But having said all that... I get nothing but compliments from my Aussie friends because it is certainly unique and well made.

I see some USPS Letter Carriers with nice leather straps on their bags here in Illinois, I need to stop one of them and find out where they get them. I think they might work well with the Peterman Mailbag. IRWALTON, congrats on your acquisition.

Gee...I didn't think that this was such an unknown item. I always thought that this was one of Peterman's staple items. I was thinking of maybe swapping out the current strap with a WW2 GI style rifle sling ( http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t.../search-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1 ).
Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Scott

I was thinking rifle sling too, there are so many styles available. Of course for real fancy style, visit saddle maker and make yourself belt and strap with similar look :)

This bag is certainly a staple of their catalog--i got one in 1994 and still have it, not too much the worse for wear despite being hauled literally all over the country and having carried everything from a bunch of books to a full picnic.

I don't mind the short strap all the time--sometimes it's the right length for what i need it to do--but i do also have a second longer strap for which i sometimes swap it out, when i need to carry it as a cross-strapped satchel. Mine has toggle clips like the original rather than the hooks on that Cabela's sling, but it is about the same length and beefiness of leather.
