and up until recently it looked like this hat

which isn't mine- but it had the same bash, and a feather band like that. Ugly. So I did this. I need to buy a real band for it.

No interior shots as of right now (the camera battery's died) but it's the stetson western logo, with the horse drinking out of the cowboy's hat. On the sweatband it says John B. Stetson 4x beaver and xxxx stetson. I have a feeling the hat's from the '80's. I bought it because it was cheap, I wanted a cowboy hat other than my open road and I saw what I could do with it.

Yes, Dinerman you have improved the look of that hat tremendously. Nice save.

ribbon would be nice. where d'ya think I could pick one up?

I am going to the rodeo today, and there's a westernwear store by it. they probably just have leather bands though.

Fabric stores; fabric sections of stores like Wal-Mart, sell lengths of grosgrain ribbon. Somebody here at the Lounge can advise you on how to add it to the hat, or there are several professionals here that can do it the right way for a fair price. I've done my own hats but do not feel comfortable advising anyone on the how-to of it.

Think I might do something with mine.

I have a similar hat, also circa 1980, but mine is white and has a thin ribbon band instead of the feather band. It looks outdated now so I don't wear it.

I like what you did with yours. Did you use steam to change the bash?

I crushed it, and wet it. I then steamed and steamed and steamed. I wanted to get as much of the stiffness out of the crown as I could. I then just hand steamed in the bash. Because I got the hat for about 10 bucks, I figured that no matter what I did to it, it wouldn't be a great loss, so I tried my hadn at putting a bit of acurl on the brim by hand. I still need to find myself a nicer band.

It's not super soft or anything, but it is better than what it was like before.

it involved a lot of suishing, punching and steaming, but like I said, it's better.

I wouldn't do this on a hat you really cared about. Try it on a junker first.

I will try bashing mine today. I think I will also need plenty of steam because the hat is VERY stiff. I'm trying for a teardrop crown. You got yours for a good price. I bought mine new and payed $75. That was a lot of money in 1980.

well- this is why I love my friendly local neighborhood thrift shop. They have hats for less. It's funny though. All they know is stetson. Stetsons run for 15 bucks. all other hats run for 5. I got this rather ugly cowboy hat for 10, I got my pristine cavanagh for 5. Is there something wrong with that?
