My mom just got back from visiting the last surviving family member from her mother's generation. The latest bit of info that she got was that one of her uncles was the Italian consulate during WWII. No one seems to have any specific details on him. It looks like the US didn't have formal diplomatic relations with Italy during the war, so it's beginning to sound like it might not have been true.

As far as I know, we had diplomatic relations with Italy until December 12, 1941, so he may have been the consulate until then.
