I think the taper of my hat better suits my face than would a tall, straight crown of the Golden Era. Although it is my only fedora. So I'll have to wait and see when my collection expands.

I don't know that I actually prefer the tapered aesthetic, though. Heck; I like just about all of them!

A tapered crown, like the width of the brim, is largely a matter of what the wearer (or the woman in his life) likes. While the dominant taste, in this forum, tends to favor a straight sided crown and a brim width somewhere around 2 5/8", a hat outside those parameters is not necessarily bad. The fact is that hat makers manufacture things that sell, and they stop making things that don't sell. The fact that Indiana Jones fans and hat collectors, such as we, have gotten the hat factories to make what we want is proof of this principle.

I prefer non-tapered hats on myself, but the tapered ones certainly look great on some others. I don't judge others by their clothing so taper or no taper fedoras look great to me.

I actually prefer non-tapered as well. In fact, while not fond of the name I look best in porkpies.

Taper doesn't work well on every face shape. Mine's round and full, so I can't swing it. Makes my head look as tho it comes to a point.

Also, a little taper is tough to find these days. It's built into most all felt hats these days, and the grade of felt is lower today and shrinks faster, so the taper easily becomes drastic.

First - both "Eye-talian" and "dago" are derogatory ethnic slurs and shouldn't be appearing on the board. Hiding behind smileys or using "LOL" and the like is just that - hiding. It does nothing to lessen the impact or original intent, and does not suddently make them more socially correct or palatable.

But back to the original post, I'd agree with Clay - Using MAB1's definition of adversion, Frijoli's statemetn would be my interpretation as well. He's rethinking his attraction to taper. Rethinking his aversion to would be turning toward tapers, thinking hats that taper are now appealing in away they used to be off-putting. Me thinks the latter is what he was aiming for in the original post.

This wouldn't have been a bad discussion if it hadn't been started off in such a clumsy way.

It's not often that I get the 'huzz' while in the Fedora Lounge but MAB1 managed to make me feel quite embarrassed for him.

For the record; I don't like tapered crowns on me. Too pointy.

Ah, the fun of Ethnic Slurs.
I was more than a little shocked to see the word Dago used so flippantly. But then I put it aside assuming MAB was of a different nationality to me and as such followed different social norms. After all his profile says that he's from Cool Town and Dago might well have different connotations there?

After all I have a black friend who goes by the name of Jigga (short for Jigga Boo) which I believe would be less than socially acceptable in the US. This guy even has vanity licence plates with Jigga on them.
Also in Australia an Italian would once have been derided as a Wog. Yet somehow the term lost its worst connotations and we ended up with a group of performers (of Italian, Greek and Lebanese extraction) performing a stage play, TV show and eventually movie which made fun of the term.
Wogs Out of Work, Wog Boys and Wog-A-Rama
these guys also popularised the term Skip (short for Skippy the Bush Kangaroo) as a term for Australians of Anglo extraction.

Well, I'm going on a bit and it isn't about hats so I'll finish with a suggestion that MAB may be unaware of the negativity associated with his use of Dago.

Actually one last funny story,
an Aussie TV (Bert Newton I think) performer made the mistake of referring to Mohammed Ali as 'The Boy'
Ali had told a joke and Newton looked to the audience an said "I like the boy"
Ali and Newton had two different grasps on the same language and what was to Ali an insult was in Australian parlance of the time a perfectly harmless (and common) phrase with no racist connotations at all
And in closing,

I don’t dislike the hat on Sir Anthony Lector,
but I guess, like slurs hats are a matter of personal preference.
