Is the vintage crowd the curmudgeon crowd?

Having two children put a momentary crimp into my late night ways. Being older means that they are fewer, but when given the opportunity, I'm the one coming home at dawn. If that means there are no more parties to go to, best to make ones own. That way you can be assured of attendance by only the very best people. By that I mean your own hand picked, well dressed cronies.

If all else fails on the venue front, a party of your own invention (preferably one that last the weekend and includes house guests and intrigue), is the best solution of all.;)

You mean like one of those "Host a Murder Mystery" things, or a weekend-long session of "The Assassination Game"? Sounds fun, except I doubt they'd let a lot of my "tools" on the plane or into the country (red Sharpies, Mr. Yuk stickers and lemon juice, airsoft pistols, foam "daggers", bundles of wire and Styrofoam blocks) :( lol

Perhaps something less contrived. More like "Vintage Country House Party" in which the guests all play croquet, dance to a band on the lawn, drink too much and jewelry goes missing. All with a most amusing outcome that becomes the stuff of legends... until the next party. :p

Sure, take all the fun out of it... where's the "intrigue" in that?:p lol I can see plenty of ways to avoid contriving a TAG match, like call it a "garden party with an OSS/SOE twist"* and hand everybody an envelope with "how to play" when they arrive... 'Course, we all know I'm nuts, so I'm probably not the best source of ideas.lol lol lol
*See, one can make that "vintage" too!lol

to the list of great curmudgeons lets not forget my favorites Groucho Marx, George Burns and Walter Mathau. They all did it with style and the first one with a good cigar, the second with a so-so cigar but for one heck of a longtime and the last with Sophia Loren, whats not to like.:eusa_clap

Great curmudgeonly moments George Burns and Walter Mathau "The Sunshine Boys";)

I would much rather go somewhere from 9-2 rather than 5-10 or whatever. By the time I get out of work, have a bite to eat, pick up around the house a bit, change, etc., it's getting pretty close to 9, and once I get to wherever the action is, I want to be able to spend some real time there. Five hours or so lets me have a few drinks in the first couple of hours, loosen up a bit, get comfortable enough that I don't have to drink more to stay loosened up, and be good to drive by the time 2am rolls around.

Can a curmudgeon take himself as his principal target of sardonicism? If so, I nominate Oscar Levant. Funny and musically talented enough that he never got tiresome.

Surely a veteran stayer-upper, too - of the chronic insomniac variety, where the candle burns you at both ends.

Completely a night owl. I work at sea, and any time on shore is a weekend. I only hit the town once a month, if I'm lucky, but the natural rule that brings me home at the end of the night is simple; I'll be out as late as the other night owls. When I run out of friends, I hit the sack.

That said, 90% of my weekends are spent quietly at home, and reading a book until I doze off on the couch is, for me, an excellent evening.

First post!

I wouldn't say I or the Mrs. turn in particularly early, but we like to be in by midnight at the latest. There have been a few ocassions to be out later, but we certainly don't make it a habit.

When I was a much younger, much more single lad, I used to stay up into the wee hours to the point of simply not sleeping. There was no booze or illegal business involved, I've just always had a problem with sleeping - as in I don't sleep.

Never been much of one for late nights; give me early mornings anyday, whilst the earth is still fresh and unsullied by the day. An evening meal with friends is far far preferable than a late night at some overblown meat-market. :)
