Whiskey is another thing which I think the Irish do quite well.

Yeah. And the Pope is quite Catholic. ;)

Try the shop at Bushmills for some bottlings which are all but impossible to find in the US. Then, down south there is Midleton. Most excellent

It's been a few years since I last dropped into the distillery, but from memory, the Millennium (if they still have it) is an especially good one, while the sixteen year malt is exquisite. To the best of my knowledge, neither is available elsewhere.

Another Irish tradition is the Aran sweater - expensive new, though I've turned up some real second hand bargains in charity shops before now. Years ago, before the arthritis got her too bad, my paternal grandmother, God rest her soul, used to knit Aran bits and bobs for us. Outside of specialist shops now, though, it seems to be a dying art.

Hmm, many things to consider.
Last time they came they brought a bottle of homemade potcheen! That was sometime before 9/11, so I wouldn't expect them to try that trick again. ;)

lol Got to be careful with that stuff - if you get a bad batch, sending you blind is the least it can do.

Kevin & Howlin is on Nassau

Just across the street and the wall from Trinty.

Aran sweaters - I'm still kicking myself for not buying myself one. Last year I travelled about the Burren, even looking out at the Arans' from time to time, and shopping in numberous stores for just the "right" one, still, I left empty handed. There were just too many "right" choices.

Bushmills - I did not repeat the sweater error at Bushmills as I laid in everything I could afford.

Hi ThesFlishThngs,

There's a great shop on Nassau street in Dublin where you can get traditional Irish woolen and linen throws, sweaters, caps etc. It's opposite Trinity College. I think the items they sell are great quality, uniquely Irish and reasonably priced.

In that locality there are two pipe tobacco stores on College Green where you can get Irish made pipes (Petersons) and "Dublin" blend pipe tobacco. ;)

They've arrived now, last night in fact, having brought newspapers, magazines, a small Christmas pudding (with packet of sauce to add), a bottle of Paddy whiskey and one of Pernod Fils. Who knows what else might emerge from their bags over the next days...........

Randooch clearly knows good whisky! ;)

I'm reminded of the words and the expression of a pretty red-haired girl (At my age any woman mid-forties or less is still a girl) who took a tiny taste of my dram of Red Breast with one small floating ice cube, "Ooh, that is dangerous." Mmmm, dangerous, indeed.

Find Red Breast in the USA

I find that many of the state run ABC stores in NC have it and MacDoogals in SC seems often to have it. Both states have it priced something over 40 bucks. Cheap it ain't but most excellent it is. At those prices I don't put the bottle out when the Coneheads come over. It's too good to waste on the consume mass quantities crowd or worse, the mix it with Diet Coke folk.

I'll chase a bottle down somewhere. Gilhooley's Saloon here on the
southside should have some auld sod mist-of-the-bog available.
Have been nursing a chest cold with Evan Williams sour mash boubon.
At $11.89 a throw, it's not Maker's Mark, but it is good enough. :)

People on another forum who live and work around Chicago seem to find lots of hard to find bourbon at a business named Binny's. I gather this place of business has lot's of all kinds of hootch.

Redbreast Costs Big $$

Gotcha Boo. Red Breast, Wild Geese, and some peats.
The cost:
Gonna have a talk with Santa. :)

Several years ago when Redbreast came on the scene in my neck-o-the-wood at a shop in SC, it was priced about $38.95. Nowadays, in NC, it's $46.95 (I think). Serious chips. At those prices, as I had said somewhere before, I keep it hidden when the "Consume mass quantities" crowd is in the house.
