Exactly so. Lucas' core problem is that he doesn't understand how humans work, no matter how good he is at designing video games. Spielberg has made some great films over the years, I'll give him that, but the vast majority of his output is far too heavy on the schmaltz for me. I love the Indy films, but I think it has come time for someone to do something better. I still have al ot of affection for Temple, however unfashionable that might be. A lot of the subtleties of Indy's relationship with Shortround - the way he treats him as an adult not a kid, and yet in some ways behaves himself like a big kid around the kid.... that's a theme that's interesting, but gets a bit lost in the "Hey, kids, here's a kid for you to want to be!" Disneyesque side of it. I'd like to have seen that better explored by a more talented director. (It also has a place in the later films' exploration of Indy first as son and then father in Crusade and Skull respectively.)
I was thinking that there probably could be a film with an adult Short Round returning as the source of a new story - would help with marketing in Asia if nothing else.
