In Peru highlands, schoolkids must now wear hats against sun's harmful rays

Nothing exciting,,but ordering 740,000 hats is noteworthy.

Made me think of one of our fellow Aussie loungers who said in his school you were not permitted to go outside for recess if you didn't have your hat on.

From reading the article and considering the economic conditions it appears they'll be using a mixture of baseball caps and cloth bucket hats. Even wool felt is expensive when you consider how fast kids grow.

This sounds like a perfect situation for entrepreneurial efforts from local folks, maybe one of those "microfinance" deals, even. There must be plenty of know-how within easy shipping distance to the highlands, too. Fascinating opportunity, anyway, to create employment and fill a local need. Kind of a shame to think of a bunch of sweatshop ballcaps filling the void.
