Imitation Onyx

You know that is a good question....Onyx is a semi-precious stone which normally has a very low price point. That being the case it is not as often replaced with a simulant. Ahh, but still it is....so we have to look closely. The most often used to simulate onyx is ...enamel or faux enamel. These items look like something was painted on to the metal instead of being set into the item. Glass is also sometimes used but the two do look different. one will look like died glass while the onyx looks like a shiny black rock. Onyx is usually died so when you look closely you can see banding and inclusions in the rock. Are you looking at a specific piece? What the piece is made of can answer the question almost by itself...

I've looked closely at the studs (and cufflinks),and I think they are definitely imitation  .So now another question comes up,how obvious will it be to people that I'm wearing imitation onyx shirt studs?I suppose I could haunt Ebay for a Krementz or Swank set,but of course I've already been doing that for the last few months (albeit for MOP studs and cufflinks).
