Clark Gable did not wear an undershirt and sales of the T-shirt plummeted (and sales of deodorant sky-rocketed! -OK, I can't back that up.)

Bogart wore the trench and trenches were immortalized.

Ralph Lauren dressed 1974’s “Great Gatsby” and his entire career was made.

Indiana Jones restored some luster to the fedora.

When was the last time something like this happened? Trends tend to come from what young people are wearing on the streets. This seems to come mostly from musicians. You certainly don’t see young men dressing Hogwart’s prep, though they are definitely reading it.

Evidently, celebrity and film no longer inspire the sort of devotion to start a trend. Can anyone think of a recent film that started a trend?

Band of Brothers.. 101st reenactors everywhere!!.. ..

I think the Dylan Thomas movie "Edge of Love" will certainly highlight 40s civilian fashion.

Good thread!..:)

Although it's been several years ago (1992), "Last of the Mohicans" was a catalyst for 18th century reenacting (specifically the "longhunter" persona of the 1750's - 1760's).

I was in college when the movie came out. I remember a short-lived resurgence in the "Gatsby cap" and some minor aspects of related dress style. Too bad it didn't catch hold, as the 70's would have been a much better decade (clothing-wise). [huh]

Agreed! Though, we have that film to thank for Lauren's career that came after. He has done much to keep classic styles on the shelves through a whole lot of weirdness that followed.

Bonnie and Clyde also created a fashiontrend in the late 60's.
Yeah, that started the brief resurgence of 30s fashion in the early 70s. But I guess soon after that it was disco that killed that in favor of polyester leisure suits? :eusa_doh:

For a while, the Matrix made the "goth" coat even more popular and made a certain look of sunglasses fashionable.

Even sadder yet, those trends from the streets are actually trends from prison!

I remember cutting all my sweatshirts to look like the Flashdance girl. At dance class we all had the same look, a bunch of 11 yr olds lol. But that was still 25 yrs ago. Nothing more recent has come to mind

While not an article of clothing, I've heard that the film, The Italian Job was responsible for the popularity of the mini-Cooper.

There are lots of films responsible for Raybans being so cool, Men In Black comes to mind, as well as The Matrix and Blues Brothers.

I recall having a mania for Harris Tweeds after seeing Chariots of Fire.

A Television show, Miami Vice. No socks with shoes, t-shirts with unstructured sport coats, 3 day stubble, etc. the resurgence of Miami culture in the national consciousness., music, nightlife, drug lord excess, etc.

I totally forgot -- when the film Out of Africa came out in the mid-80's, cotton and canvas and khaki-colored clothes were in style for both men and women. Banana Republic clothes became all the rage.

Who would not like to dress and look like Meryl Streep?

While it didn't seem to affect daywear, Titanic had an impact on formal wear and wedding attire for several years. We did several copies of the "jump dress", a few white versions of the red/black dinner dress for brides, and one woman ordered the departure suit for a cruise. I thought that a bit odd, considering how superstitious people can be about boats. But it was a fun year or two.

I have read that Breakfast at Tiffany's created a craze for black sheat dresses and orange tabby cats!! What can I say I have a black Holly Golightly dress myself and of course a pair of tortoise Ray Bans with green lenses.. I just need a tiara.

Saving Private Ryan did insane things to the collector's market for M1 and M1A1 Thompsons, per some collectors I know. IIRC, they said The Untouchables ratcheted up prices for the 1921/1928 "Chicago Typewriter" versions similarly...

Chalk it up that SPR and Band of Brothers did it to all things WWII ETO-Western Front, I guess.
