I love the Fed IV!!

This thread is for Fed IVs in particular. If someone wants to post pictures of a recreased Fed IV here, I don't see why a tumult has to be made about the 'appropriate' thread for hat creases. Many folks here hold this hat in various levels of contempt, anyway.

Comments are type-written, but the 'between-the-lines' comes through loud and clear.

I love my Fed IV, I like the brim too... but I keep thinking about trimming it to 2 5/8 or 2 1/2 evenly all the way around. Is this bad? Should I respect it and leave it as it is and just order a Campdraft instead and stop wondering?

But seriously (or slightly more serious than above), I am thinking of trimming and attempting to bind it (have some nice grosgrain woven edge). Views? Any photos of a trimmed or trimmed and bound Fed IV?

But, that doesn't mean it can't be altered. I, for one, have had the desire to see one trimmed down to a 2 1/4" brim. I think that with the high, full crown, it would look great. I just can't bring myself to do it to one of my hats.

As you can see by this post in the Hat Creases thread I considered doing the same thing in December. My thought process was the same as yours--it isn't a vintage hat, and if I screw it up I can get a replacement. Fortunately, wiser heads among us here on The Lounge prevailed and I left it as-is, and it has become one of my "go to" hats.

A quarter inch is no small deal on a hat brim. I can tell the difference of a quarter inch on a hat brim at a fairly quick glance. Two inches on a Fed IV? No go for me. Two-and-a quarter? Entirely doable.

" The Last Man Standing" Art's tribute to the Bruce Willis Bootleg era flick. Lots and lots of controversy surrounding the the original milliner for this particular hat for this particular flick, Art just claimed to make a spot on replica. 2 1/4" brim and close to 6" crown, cool as all get out hat. Ohhh and accompanying me at our band gig, my lovely lead vocalist wife. Gotta try to save money any way you can playing music these days.

Have a look at my Moonstone:



I sent it to Henry the Hatter in Detroit with instructions to put on a matching ribbon, a little narrower than the original black, and to trim the brim to 2.5". They did the first part fine, but somebody got carried away and trimmed it back to 2 1/4". At first I didn't like it . . . but after wearing it a little while, I got to appreciate the 1930s vibe of it.

That hat has had a wild life for a mere concoction of felt and satin. First it traveled halfway around the world to me. Then, one day, I was wearing it when I stopped in to Meyer the Hatter to look at some straws. I happened to mention to Mr. Sam that the hat was still a bit loose on me. Well, while my back was turned, he went and fastened foam tape in under the sweatband all around -- so now it's a bit tight, and I have to stretch it each winter when I want to wear it. And then came the surgery --!

The Moonstone does look nice . . . but it's kind of like the cat you want to take care of because you know it's been abused and abandoned to fend for itself!

Mr. Sam pulled off the tape's backing, so the tape is fastened in there. I know, I could hack away at the foam with scissors, but that'll leave the sweat sort of bumpy. The band is the thin flexible leather; I suspect this regular Fed IV got the deluxe sweat by mistake.

Is there a way to remove the tape without damaging the sweatband or the hat?

My guess is either a hair dryer and some patience, or maybe acetone? Though niether will do your sweat any favors.
