I couldn't pass this up for this price. I have one of their sport coats that is the best fitting one I have. I have never bought a suit onE-bay.....but I figure I can't lose on this one. Thoughts?

I am surprised that no one else bid. I know it is not a vintage suit, but the cut is nice....at least in the photos.

Zegna is a very nice brand; typically the fabrics are rich and the details are usually well attented to. In this case, I like the width of the lapels. It's very nice! Congratulations.

The problem with most DB suits is that the lapels aren't generous or dramatic enough. This one looks very nice, indeed.

Hemingway prediction for 2007: the return of the double breasted suit, in a big way! I see it for fall and I'll tell you why: peaked lapel single-breasted suits are growing in popularity. People are looking for something different. It has been 25 years of notched lapels and 15 years since DB were popular on anyone else but David Letterman.

Wow! It has been 25 years hasn't it. Gee, I have been out of style that long? I only wore double breasted suits for years until I went to Nordstroms and asked for one. The guy looked like I had two heads. He said he didn't think they had any and dismissed me. A look through the racks proved him wrong but there was slim pickings. That sort of pushed me into vintage. The old "I am going to wear what I want not what you want me to" thing.
I guess I am mainstream again if Zegna is putting out suits like that again.

Last week-end I bought an as-new (the pockets were still sewn up) Ermenegildo Zegna 3-button SB suit in their dark High Performance worsted for less than 10 GBP from a charity shop.

I don't usually buy modern clothing, but I figured I could always auction it if I didn't like it. As people always talk in glowing terms about Zegna quality, I examined it very closely. Here, for what they are worth, are my comments.

The fabric is extremely light. It is 'off the scale' of suiting weights (I have shirts that are much heavier) and this will take some getting used to. The hand, however, is quite crisp and the trousers take a keen crease, which shows that the worsted is well twisted. The cut of the jacket is too 'sack' for my taste and it should be three inches shorter, but that's just my preference. Likewise the trousers, which taper too much (a typical modern Italian cut).

Most of all, I would not describe it as particularly well made. The lining (which I feel often covers a multitude of sins) is closed with what I would describe as 'tack' stitching - you can get your finger between some of the stitches - and then covered by pressing the lining over the seam. I would expect better at the original price, but for 10 GBP, it's OK.

The most un-nerving thing, however, is that you can see through it! The trousers are half lined, and if you stand on a light coloured surface and look down, you can see the outline of your ankles and shoes! That, for me, will take some getting used to. Will I keep it? Well, I work in hot climates from time to time, and I dare say that if it was light coloured I would regard it as a good tropical suit, so perhaps it's just the colour I'm not keen on. Come to think of it, a dark tropical suit is unusual. Maybe I will keep it.

I'm reading an Esquire from Aug. '39 and they have tropical worsted wools with chalkstripes....so not THAT unsusual. Also, I've seen ads for dark colored Palm Beach fabric suits.

My comments only apply to the super-thin High Performance worsted fabric, and only ine example at that. The suit you have bought seems to be made of a different fabric and is of a different style. I'm sure you'll love it. I think I'll see the best of my acquisition when I work in hot, humid Hong Kong in May. Wearing it in the UK at the moment feels like I don't have any trousers on!

I've seen Zegna's works and the fit is what I love. They tend to be of the higher armhole set when compared to the ccompetition on the market. As for fabric weight... all companies have their lighter and their heavier models. I just wish the heavier models were as heavy as they were back when suits were made to last 10 years.
