Look a that guy jaywalking across the road. He could have walked half a block and crossed at the lights legally.

Its cold out, the parents have winter jackets on and they didn't even put a tuque on the baby. -or- Its sunny and +30 Celsius out and that child doesn't even have a hat on.

Look at those cowboys chowing down on their meals in this fine family restaurant..... while wearing their Stetsons. How uncouth.

The top things that get under my skin that I see regularly. Should they bother me? Probably not. In a society that has no real standards what can you expect. Just keep on being the best person you can and hopefully someone takes your example and follows.

Nah. When you've got too many convoluted rules, you either get people who just ignore the rules, or those who are always criticizing the ones who don't follow the rules to the letter. The latter is easily found on most suit threads.

The best rules are always the most simple ones.
Respect other people.

Well said! Sometimes, when manners get codified and become rules, the heart of the matter can get lost. This really isn't difficult.

I propose: If keeping your hat on your head blocks the views of others or makes people uncomfortable for any reasonable cause, you should take it off. In other circumstances, suit yourself. Courtesy and consideration are most appreciated when sincere. Awareness and genuine concern for others is, I think, the only rule needed.

I must say though, that hat wearing, even to pricey events often leaves no place to stash one's lid except on your knee. No hat checks or coat checks. Given the tight quarters and poor manners of most theatres, I hesitate to put my lid on my lap lest someone bump it from my leg to the floor.

Tearing each other aprt had nothing to do with it; that's the last thing I would aim for.

All I said was that he was entitled to his opinion, I disagreed, and I had no interest in confronting him about it because that would mean nothing but trouble.

Even if I did have a problem, it's such a fueled debate with everyone here that I doubt I would have had the guts to bring it out in the open in the first place.

Me, I live and let live for the most part. If someone's actions or inactions do not physically harm me or mine, take my money, my property or my liberty then I'm not going to war over it. Being "offended" is not something I waste time on.
However, if any of my rights are really infringed I can bring out the horns in a hurry. There's a line there that is best left uncrossed. But if a kid walks indoors with a hat on that just isn't enough to trip that trigger.

Now, there is a personality type that I've noticed over the years that insists others do as they do or as they like. Drives 'em nuts when others don't comply with their view. I'm not that type but to those my attitude is, again, live and let live, so I don't try to change the way they tick.

I never knew of the wikipedia meaning of the word "tuque". In french, a "toque" is the white high hat professional cooks are entitled to wear.

And "toqué" (pronounced "tokay", not to be confused with the Hungarian wine the Alsacians stole the name of), means "crazy", "loony" ("chiflado", in Spanish).

And "étiquette" means "label", or "sticker". What's in a word...
