I blame whole wheat

<quote>The early pioneers living off white flour biscuits and dumplings must have been awfully sickly!</quote>

The flour they used wasn't the white flour that we know of today. It was a flour in which the germ and, gasp, sometimes a bit of husk was still on the wheat berries. It was more akin to our whole wheat. Hard tack made of it is quite tasty and will sustain you well.

I'm glad to see it go.

Maybe it'll save some kids from having health problems later on.

Just because something is old doesn't mean it was great.

Archaeologically speaking, the teeth of elite Europeans from various eras have survived more poorly than the plebeians' teeth despite better medical care. Whiter bread has been identified as the culprit. More sugar, probably, too.

I went grocery shopping this evening (trying to beat the heat, no dice, it's 80 degrees at 11PM) and couldn't resist buying one loaf of Wonder Bread, some Skippy creamy peanut butter and some Smucker's strawberry jam.

I haven't had Wonder Bread (voluntarily, at least) for well over 30 years, but I just wanted some for old times' sake before it's gone.

Am I the only one who unapologetically *likes* white bread? I grew up on Nissen's White (the local equivalent of Wonder), and have never been overweight, never had problems with my teeth, never had any vitamin deficiencies, and never had any other of the ill effects that supposedly befall the eaters of such a heinous product. Am I endowed with super powers, or are, perhaps, the ill effects just a bit exaggerated?

Nope...I like it too....granted...I dont eat -tons- of it or anything...

Maybe the wonder-haters can go start a thread about how great wheat is and leave us be ;)

White bread was a treat in my house. We grew up on Roman Meal (great bread, or was anyway) so when a loaf of white came into the home wed pounce on it.

My Granny HATED white bread, so it was super rare when it appeared from whatever vortex it came from. My brother and I would make every kind of sandwich we could think of just to get the bread. I liked sugar and butter :)

Nope! I like white bread ... in my house, wheat bread was the treat and white the staple. My favorite sandwich was Peanut Butter Overload (creamy peanut butter made crunchy with Peanut Butter Crunch cereal).

Fortunately for me, I have access to a wide variety of foods besides breads. If I ate only bread, or mostly bread, I might experience some health problems. But then, if I ate only lettuce, or mostly lettuce, I might also experience some health problems...

Whole wheat is nasty as all hell. I never liked the stuff and never will eat it.

Wheat bread is more hippy nonsense. The same people who don't bathe regularly.

I only eat white bread, I'm 5' 10" 185 pounds, heart rate of 57 beats per minute, blood pressure of 115 over 85. It hasn't affected my health.

I would say the real culprit is miserliness. The wealthier are more interested in squirreling away every last cent than spend money on a dentist. I remember my Dad saying he didn't care how much overtime his worked none of his 5 kids were going to have a horse's mouth with crooked teeth.:eusa_clap That has always been a sticking point with my parents. If someone was bragging my Mom would always say; "well with all that money they got how come they're kids teeth are all rotten and crooked? Maybe they should spend some money there first".:D

I'd be impressed by that if white bread was the only thing you eat.

I think it's hilarious how much of a response this thread has gotten. I'll put another 2 cents worth. I always liked Pepperidge Farm and Arnold white bread because they had some substance and flavor. And who doesn't love a good sour dough bread? But Wonder, or TipTop, or Stroehmann's or any of the other mass produced white breads, you can have 'em!

Reading some of these posts, it amazes me that so many played with food as kids. Unbelievable.:D

In my house, as far as we 4 kids were concerned. our mom started the fun and games by hiding peas and brussels sprouts in our applesauce. From then on, all bets were off. Besides, have you ever tried to play table-top football with wheat or rye? They just don't have the binding capability of white bread. See, there really is a non-culinary justification for the existence of white bread? :D

Actually, my father had several belts. He chose to use them judiciously and only outdoors. My brother and I were well-acquainted with this phenomena. Our acquaintance was not without justification. Of course this acquaintance helped us develop a keen appreciation of circumspection and a fine sense of self-preservation. We weren't really bad just drawn that way. :D

He was also a big fan of football. :)
