I'm not sure if any of you have ever used the website www.wallbase.cc, but it's a goldmine for anyone into art & photography, particularly if you're looking for desktop wallpapers. I've been using it for months, and there are thousands - heck, probably millions - of pictures of just about everything imaginable, all searchable, and all for free (no, this is not a business plug, I just wanted to tell everybody how awesome this place is!).
But why spread the word here on TFL? I searched the keyword "historical," and ran into a variety of pictures that I knew you guys n' gals just could not afford to miss. There are hundreds (I'm nowhere near done with them myself) of massive photographs, from sometime in the early century. It's unclear exactly what year (I haven't spotted a year in any of the pictures), but it's readily evident from the content of the prints, particularly the automobiles, that it's very early century, I'm guessing 1910's. They don't seem to be constrained to one geographic area either, with photos from small towns and big cities, occasionally with something instantly recognizable in the background.
Here are only a few of the numerous pictures. I was captivated by this grocer's use of apples to advertise:

Again, these are just a couple of hundreds, maybe thousands of pictures. What makes them so interesting is that many of them are of "mundane" things: everyday sights like shop windows and street corners, parked cars and the like.
NOTE: The way Wallbase is set up, only around 35 pictures load at a time so as not to destroy your Internet speeds; as you scroll down to the bottom of the page more will load (the page continually gets longer as you reach the new "bottom."). I scrolled through a LOT of WWII and other pictures before I got to these (about 860, to be specific) but they ARE down there and ARE worth looking at. I hope you all enjoy these as much as I am.
