Hi,

I would like to clean an old boater. It has just dust, but a lot of it. Besides dusting, something more would be needed. Can I safely apply a damp cloth?

Regards!

Boaters were stiffened with a size of water-soluble glue or gelatin, so be careful not to get it too wet. Even a light dampening will make it a bit sticky. Put down some wax paper or saran wrap to lay it on while it's drying.

Damp cloth? Surely.

I've discovered that the microfiber cloths are the best cleaning cloths around. Just fill a bucket of water and just a small spritz of dish soap. It's easy to control the amount of suds and moisture by how much you wring out the cloth.

Great for cleaning and dusting almost anything including hats of any fiber. If you need a lot of moisture and suds for a particular spot then just follow up immediately with a clean dry towel.

Accidentally rinse it out in a thunderstorm .

Stiffen it up with grape jelly and beer ;).
