How many new jackets do you have coming (and how many potential ones)?

I'm afraid that European Customs won't care much whether Greg pays VAT or not. And so the jacket will cost 1000 GBP + shipping costs + 4% duty + 20% VAT + fees = about 1260 GBP/1400 EUR. Customs are only waived if the product is largely English, which shouldn't be the case with Japanese leather. Where at this price 40 GBP more or less no longer matters.
At least that's how I understood the current customs regulations.
If the manufacturer (e.g. Aero) would deduct the VAT, since he actually does not have to pay it to the British tax office for an export, the British VAT would be canceled out with the European VAT and the jacket would be 20% cheaper. One can also say that in this way the profit is properly maximized when exporting.
But maybe Greg will also send the jacket from Northern Ireland then it would be possible as usual within the EU, without customs / VAT / fees.
(The VAT to be paid corresponds of course to that of the respective EU country. Germany 19%, Austria 20%. Charges are also handled differently)

This!

That´s why I said, it could mean all sorts of things. If Greg is VAT-exempt, it means, that he cannot deduct VAT from EU-orders. He could however

- lower prices for customers ordering from the EU (I understand Iron Heart is doing that; Dundas Footwear from Norway have been doing that in the past)
- arrange for a courier service (e.g. DHL) to handle EU-imports as his expence.

Jacket will be send by the end of this month. Thanks for all your feedback! Once I receive it, I should be able to gain some insight from the paperwork. In any event, I am happy for Greg that he seems to be really busy, and I really do appreciate that he took the admin of handling import duties from me.

I was surprised to see your 4% number.
But it's true. So arbitrary.
If you import a leather jacket into the EU besides the VAT of your country above EUR 150 you have to pay a customs fee based on the sum of the product price and the shipping, which in the case of leather jackets is 4%.
If it's some other kind of clothes it's 12%.
If it's leather shoes it's 8%.
If the shoes are vegan for instance it's 17%.
And for some reason notebooks are duty free.

Ok, you could argue, that leather jackets and shoes are in generally higher ticket items, so therefore the percentage is lower.
Still, as with so many other rules and regulations, I'd prefer a simple one with less hassle for everybody involved.

This an interesting topic.
I saw, that when US citizens order from a EU based online shop the VAT will get deducted, mostly around 20%.
So if one is on holidays in the US and has the leisure you could order stuff in a European shop and get it for 20% less.
I think the threshold in the US is EUR 700 currenly until which no customs will be charged.
You just have the theoretical risk of having to pay, when you return at the airport.

Full circle.

A year ago I sold my ELMC Californian in American Walnut to a fellow lounger. Not because I didn't love the jacket anymore but because it was too small for me. Since I've been looking for one in size 42.

This morning I received an email from the guy who now owns my Californian size 40. He knew I was still looking for one in 42 and he spotted one in like new condition on eBay UK.

My offer was accepted which means I'm now the proud owner of a Californian which actually fits me.

Actually I now own two. I found one in black last week. Serendipity :)

@Marc mndt Congratulations and really good choice to buy two really nice jackets - I somewhat regret that I sold my ELMC A2 about 3 years ago due to fit issues but the horsehide is fantastic!

The leather looks a little more substantial on this one than most I've seen. THe grain looks fairly neutral as well. Should be a great starting point. Congrats!

It´s the same situation with buying electronics in say Singapore and take it back to the EU. You safe a lot on the original retail price but lose it all when/since you have to pay import duties upon entering the airport at the final destination. Some folks don´t declare the items, of course and gamble on not being caught (or so I have herad...).

My first UK jacket import customs experience.

Yesterday I bought an Eastman Californian from someone in the UK. The seller declared it as a gift with a value of €50. I just received an email from the parcel carrier, UPS, that customs crearance fees need to be payed over the value of the item+shipping costs.

Customs fee: €26.23

Which is not a lot, but that's only because I had the seller declare a value of €50. I would have had to pay about €390 (VAT+import tax over £1200+shipping) in case he had declared the real value of £1200.

Jackets from the UK have become a lot more expensive. Brexit *****.

Edit: I based the above calculation on MRSP. Since I bought second hand from eBay, I should have used purchase price instead.

I payed £705 for the jacket + shipping.
705*1.21 (VAT) = £853
£853*1.04 (import fee on leather jackets) = £887

That means that if I had declared the purchase price as the actual value, it would have cost me £182 or €205 + handling fees for the parcel carrier.

hmm... I wonder if the north of Ireland is about to experience a sudden boom in custom/repro leather jacket manufacture

2 incoming and I think I saved the best for last. We'll see, but these are probably the end game for me for a long time (or at least until I sell off a bunch). 16 total leather jackets is starting to get into obsession land and more importantly, these things deserve to be worn so they start to look the best they can look. Luckily about half of them are vintage and I have a head start, but still, would love to get down to the number of months. 1 per month, that sounds good : )

Field Leathers Route 66. Greg started today and I should have later next week. Some tweaks to his usual design, some new liner color, and hopefully some perfect measurements.

Thedi Leather removable collar- the one from Thomas's classifieds. I really love that jacket in brown and got really close to ordering one from scratch. But recent job loss has got me second guessing high end purchases. This was too good of a deal to pass up and just crossing fingers it fits me well.
