Just received this vintage jacket. It was listed as is, meaning almost as a wreck. The price was very honest , and I took the chance, thinking it looked like an Indian ranger, and if the condition was good enough, maybe it would be worth restoring. Above all, the measurements were good. Upon arrival, the jacket was as described: the lining is missing, as well as the belt (but I couldn't care less, belts are precisely what kept me away from crosszips for a long time); the main zipper needs to be replaced, the handwarmer pockets too, and there's a lot of restitching to do. There are traces left of what looked like red quilted lining. The jacket does look like an Indian ranger, including the pillion pocket on the left side. The only difference being the sleeve zippers are on the down side.
Anyway, there's work to do. I will show it to a seamstress specialized in leather who did a few alterations for me. If it's not too expensive, I'll have it restored, maybe not as thoroughly as Mysterio did. A few pics:

This is something very, very special. I think. Before restoring it, I'd try to find out what exactly is it. It's definitely very old and I'd bet on the 50's. Might be a real collectors piece. Either way, it's a fantastic looking jacket. Fits you just right!
Thanks. Even though it was very thirsty when I received it, the leather is overall in good condition considering its age (I suppose its a few decades old). There's only one spot on the shoulder that shows signs of dryness, but it still is thick enough. It was sold as horse hide, but I think it's cow. It squeaks a lot.
It did take some time to arrive. Along the way, it got stuck for a whole week in Copenhagen, I don't know why.

Thanks! I don't know where to get any more clues to identify it. Zippers are Conmar, that's a fact, but of course there are no tags, only the remnants of what looks like a thinsulate red lining...

I don't know anything about Indian jackets. The red quilt lining was very popular during the 50s. The jacket itself looks very fifties. great fit I would think worth restoring.

Hi, I’m pretty certain it’s a 40’s/50’s Grais jacket. I have a very similar one. I’ll try to post Picts on pm.
Bravo! That seems to be it! There are traces of 2 metal bars on the epaulets , and they were a distinctive Grais feature.

Meh. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever bought. I’m curious to see how the 70’s version compares to this one. It’s heavy and thick but the hide seems corrected, particularly the sleeves. One will stay and the other goes back to eBay. Side bar my multi purpose fur collar fits like a glove. I guess I’ll need to see your license and registration then?
I’ve also decided I hate elastic on jackets. Never ever again with that.

I agree. In my view elastic seems to cheapen an otherwise premium jacket.

Yeah I agree HD. I also wouldn’t call Taylor’s Leatherwear premium either. At least from this example. While it’s certainly well built and super functional, and despite being fairly heavy, the leather has a corrected feel and look. Great for shoveling snow, concealing movie candy contraband, but no show pony. Not by a long shot! LOL.
