How does a girl keep warm?

I wore an oxford type shoe today instead of boots for the first time in ages, and I thought it would be warm enough with long, thick socks under jeans. I was wrong! My feet were cold, as well as my ankles, and it was just a trip to the grocer. And it's only 40 degrees outside; it's going to get much colder. I'm thinking of dressing like a cold weather Land Girl. I'm personally, however, having trouble finding vintage or retro-look sweaters. Everything seems fancy. Maybe I need to look in the men's department... a v neck might do.

I recently found a lovely vintage 1930s black wool crepe coat with a black persian lamb collar. It was just getting cold enough here to wear it the other day, but then it started to rain. Soon!!

Have you popped over to the "Show us your 'dos!" thread? I just posted a picture of a model from the 40s on the cover of a vintage magazine wearing a v-neck sweater with a swell silk scarf. I have lots of v-necks and wasn't always sure that they were retro...well this lovely lady just proved they are a true vintage look. :)

I am finding that I'm a lot warmer when I wear foundation garments. It makes sense - Second skins keep the heat in. Another advantage! lol
DEFINITELY! I'm actually a little amazed at how much difference foundation garments make.


In the winter I'm fond of either wool or combed cotton tights. I particularly like the ones by Foot Traffic; I usually buy 'em from Sock Dreams. They also sell a lot of over-the-knee or thigh-high woolen or thick knit stockings, so I rely on them for a lot of my winter legwear.

I have learned the art of keeping warm while wearing a skirt or dress.
-Coat wool, knee length is best. A light weight thermal jacket to line your coat for extra warmth, add thick belt to pull in your waist to keep from looking bulky. On a really cold day my friend who did not know about the extra "coat" asked me if I was warm because my coat looked thin. I had to explain about my extra layer.
-Slips full or half (color beige or nude to go with everything)
-Thermal fleece pants to wear under your dresses or skirts. I got mine in two colors grey and pink. Just make sure your skirts cover your knees and you wear long enough socks so they do not peek through.
-Socks thermal boot/ski socks, over the knee socks, and knee highs. I wear these every time I wear my boots and they keep my feet very warm. These are the kind I wear http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000JGM1JI/ref=mp_s_a_2?m=A3GS3CD9G1MDLS&qid=1332978712&sr=8-2
For over the knee socks these socks are super warm http://www.rocknsocks.com/socks/over-the-knee-socks.html they have good knee highs, too. Another good web site for knee highs is sock dreams. I wear these under my boot socks.
Since I wear over the knee socks I find it hard to keep these socks up so I got a pair of mens sock garters and these work great! at keeping my socks up.
-Shoes. I wear my boots out doors and bring an extra pair or shoes with me to work to change into or I'll leave a pair at work. So I don't have to wear my heavy boots all day long.
-Leg warmers. These are great to wear. You can wear them under skirts or dresses. I wear mine when I don't wear my boots and they kept my feet and legs warm. And no one said anything when I wore them with high heels. I just removed them at work and put them back on after work.

-Head scarfs. Large square ones you can find these on Ebay for cheap. Plus they do not spoil your hair do. And they are a ton more warmer then hats. I have quite a few of these and its great. Its makes it look like I have more than one outfit.
-Camisole to wear under dresses and blouses (Colors beige or nude) for extra warmth.
-Skirts wool
-Sweaters wool
-Cardigans

Thanks Stray Cat for bumping this thread. I'm getting ready to move from Southern California to Kansas in January and I've recently started wearing a lot of skirts again so I want to look and feel classy without freezing to death in the snow. This info is all wonderful!

I find that 1930s coat combined with merino wool undergarments can keep me quite warm and cozy.
A large thick knit beret and some knit gloves.
For shoes/boots I usually wear Norwegian "labber", or Nesnalobben is the name to look for, we just call them labber or lobber:

That is so funny.
One day it was so cold out my co-worker was very worried I was going to freeze to death walking out in the snow and cold wearing a cotton dress. I had to explain and reasure her I would be fine walking out in the freezing cold weather wearing my "thin" dress and "thin" coat since I had extra layers that did not add bulk. She had no idea how many layers I had on to keep me warm as a bunny. When I told her she turned red. :)

Great winter outfit Miss Slapstick. I wish more shops sold mittens, they are the hardest gloves to find.

I'm always on the look out for some good strong winter boots since I walk around a lot and walking through thick piles of snow put a lot for ware and tare on my boots plus I have flat feet and its a pain finding a good vintage style boot with arch support.

I should start wearing my fur collars more often but scared someone will want to attack my fur. Since I live in a very urban part of the city.
