Around here you’d be contacted to determine your gang affiliation and status. Doubtful that you’re a Blood so I’d say your a Norteño (way up north aren’t you? :) ) You look like you’d house with the actives too. And here I was thinking you we’re a good family man.

This past Saturday while escorting my wife in obtaining her HQL, a fellow classmate of hers (all womens course) complimented my Cody James Straw hat and attempted to start chatting me up. I could see the invisible knives coming out of my my wife's eyes. I deftly and wisely indicated to the lady that we needed to continue the coursework so that everyone could get to the range on time and ushered her back to her seat.

Happy wife...long life.
Especially now that she's a pistol packin mama.
;)

It was bound to happen sooner or later, yesterday at the local market the young clerk at the check-out says "Hey Indiana Jones!" This the hat I was wearing. It's an almost beater grey Cavanaugh.

It's almost like a rite of passage these days--you can't call yourself a dedicated hat wearer until some well-meaning stranger makes an Indiana Jones comment about a hat you're wearing that bears only a slight resemblance to the actual Indy hats.

As you say, but you don't expect it from people who were around back when hats were more common place. Last summer, my missus and I were enjoying a coffee on the patio of a quayside pub. A lot of pubs have become restaurants and coffee shops, perhaps they have cottoned onto the fact that soft drinks make more profit than alcohol.

A lady of a certain age complimented me, saying something like, "I like your outfit," I can't remember exactly what she said but she went on to say, "don't you feel conspicuous wearing a hat?" I had to laugh, I answered, "conspicuous, with shoes like mine?" "Oh I like those," she replied. My shoes do tend to get as much notice as my hat, can't think why?

With me, smaller-than-Indy-hats get Indy remarks. Indy hats get cowboy remarks.

However I was left agape when I got... “Hey... Indiana Jones” While wearing a light colored short brimmed straw hat. His friend tried to pass it off for him and said.., oh he must mean Indy’s friend. And the guy kinda looked confused and went along with it.

There have been times, while wearing an Indy-dimensionally-correct brown fedora, that I've been called Crocodile Dundee.

I guess all (some? most?, because most people don't say anything) people see is HHAAAAAAAAAAAT!

Exactly. If it weren’t for the boxes that arrive at the door or the space they take up. My wife would never know I got any new hats. They are all just a hat.

Yup. To most people, a hat is just a hat, like a VW Beetle is just like every other VW Beetle. It's only those rare individuals who, at a glance, can tell you whether the VW Beetle he/she is looking at is a '63 or a '64.

^ Also, an analogy only a true VW aficionado would appreciate. ;)

When I was in high school, I knew a guy who drove an older model Beetle that he named Herpes The Love Bug. That was all I needed to know.

Tina & I have started to venture out post Covid19. A couple of weeks ago we went to a rather good open air vintage music festival. All very much social distancing and all that. The event was staged as a fund raising charity for the Air Ambulance Service, something close to my missus, she served 30 years as a paramedic.

Ashley was there with his military ambulance from the 1950's, we haven't seen him in ages. He told me of a meeting called: "Classic Cars on the Farm." This will explain it: https://www.facebook.com/Classic-Cars-On-The-Farm-118215906650948/ When I looked that link up it informed me that the car show was by pre-booking only and was now full. Not to worry, I knew of a rather good restaurant close to that farm. A phone call through to them and they could fit us in for their traditional Sunday lunch, it's a British thing, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings.

We arrived at the farm on Sunday, with an hour or so to wander around the cars, before we left for lunch. Ashley was most disappointed that we hadn't brought our MG. It seemed that it was a case of crossed wires. I had assumed that the online information of a full booking excluded us and Ashley had included our MG in the full booking. Not to worry, we will be back in a few weeks, weather and Covid permitting.

Now being Sunday I was dressed for the part, well it's Sunday, you have to make an effort and besides, we were off to a smart restaurant later and I couldn't be upstaged by the waiters, so Sunday attire it was. Only nobody else knew the Sunday rules. So it was down to your's truly and his missus to keep the standards up:

We certainly attracted some attention, but the best remark came from the owner of the yellow camper van seen in this photo.

Tina pointed out to me the curtain blinds were made from the same material as one of my shirts.

The fellow had said that it was unusual to see a suit worn these days, but when I showed him a photo on my phone, of the shirt in the same material as his window blinds he said: "I love your shirt, but somehow I can't picture you in a shirt made of a pair of drapes. We both had a good laugh. "What's the joke?" Asked Tina, when I told her she said to the fellow, "I made him that shirt, and if I had made your curtains they would hang a lot better than they do now." He missed the reprimand altogether, "you made it?" He exclaimed. "Oh yes," I interjected, and all these too, showing him the shirt album on my phone.

At the restaurant, the Maître d' greeted us, "may I take your hat Sir," he said. Holding it up, he admired it. "A Stetson Sovereign, I haven't seen one of those since I worked in London," he said with a smile, "a true gentleman's hat." "This fellow is angling for a big tip," I whispered to Tina as we were shown to our table. There was a sign in the reception hall that read: "In the interests of safety, please pay by card."

I saw some fellow diners paying for their meal by card, but the ten pound tip in cash certainly wasn't refused. So when it came time to pay the Maître d' returned my hat, I had laid out payment in banknotes making it obvious that there was more there than was on the receipt. "We have enjoyed a wonderful meal," I said, "so good to be out again, please keep the change with our compliments." "Thank you very much Sir," the Maître d' replied, adding, "I do so hope that we will see you again soon."

There's something about old fashioned civility that causes me to be that bit more generous with the gratuity, and that fellow knew it. I bet he didn't even know what a Stetson Sovereign was until he read it on the sweat band. Who cares? We had a wonderful time just being out.

For covid-19 related reasons, I haven't gotten my hair cut in 6+ months. I've recently decided that my hats look better with the brims turned down.

This morning, I was out in the yard with my older Stetson Roadster on with the brim down.

My wife asked me "Is that a new hat?"
