I got a Depp comparison comment last week, also. At first I didn't understand it, never having been likened to him before, but after I did a search I came up with some of the same pictures posted a few posts up, and I can see how, if you use your imagination, its is possible to make a comparison.

I wish I had his hair. haha
Wish I had his talent.

sounds like ignorance to me

maybe you want to do a little research on the term before you go throwing it around at will on a public forum ...

yes it is an American term ... please do some research for it can be highly offensive

you could get your teeth knocked in or worse if you go referring to people in that way in this country

a term of endearment among a certain culture turns to a derogatory term very quickly when coming from someone not of that culture ... know your roll my man ... know your roll

I know I've posted experiences at my mother's "house," a senior citizens' residence where about 300 people averaging approximately 85 years of age reside. These folks KNOW from hats, as they say in Brooklyn.

Last week, I had the opportunity to find Mom at a round table discussion after lunch with four other ladies, talking about something other than hats, I'm sure. As soon as I approached the group, the conversation immediately shifted to the hats of their husbands, and how much they all enjoyed seeing a "youngster" like me wearing one exactly like they all remembered. One of them even asked to see the liner!

Today's lesson: If you need some really great comments on your fedora, especially any vintage examples, hang out at a place where very senior folks do. They truly STILL appreciate a great hat!!

And more than a little snobbery, in my view.

I have found in my limited time on earth that the vast majority of folks I've encountered have an inherent worth. Many who are characterized as uneducated are not so much, given their own milieu. Yeah, I've got a hoity-toity degree from a hoity- toity school, but can I hold my own with an experienced farmer, truck driver, or plumber? Fuhgetabout it!

But beware playing Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit against me. I have a greater than average portion of my brain that contains a vast array useless facts and pop cultural references.

Everybody has a strength. And more than one weakness (mine is cookies and milk).

I always thought it might be that the lumpenproletariat were too smart to revolt, history might be on my side there. But I suppose what he is referring to are a bunch of jackasses slagging his hat. Jackasses are jackasses.
then say jackass ... redneck is an awfully specific term to be painting with such a broad stroke

it does not mean what he thinks it means and it never will

I doubt he meant to insult you. But it is an international forum, and even common languages divide. For example 'lumpenproletariat' seems to mean something other than it used to in Russia to him too. (-:

he didn't insult me ... but we don't go around dropping N bombs on the forum do we ?

there are certain terms ... at least in the US ... that were created to keep a certain culture down ... to hurt them

those cultures flipped the script on those idiots and turned these words into terms of endearment ... but here is the catch ... YOU on the outside can't use it ...not without catching a swift one anyway ... that's how these things work

where I grew up the N word was thrown around the way most use "dude" or "brother" or "my friend" ... but even though these were my friends I wasn't stupid enough to think that I could throw it out in conversation

I understand he is from another country and the meaning gets watered down and probably gets thrown around lightly ... but I don't take it lightly ... understand the words you are using when speaking on a public forum

Never a good idea to generalize any group like that.

Or maybe he just doesn't like Scottish Presbyterians. [emoji4]

As I mentioned upthread, it might have a somewhat different meaning in Russia than it does here in the U.S.; similar, but still different. That being said, I understand and agree with your point about being cautious with the words we use on forums like this. Even a term that most consider to be harmless might ruffle someone's feathers.
