It took me a moment as well. I figured other countries had rednecks, but that calling them that was either one of those uniquely American things or that the term took on a different meaning outside of the U.S..
Here it is seldom used but is simply used in a derogatory sense to a rural person defining them as uneducated and uncultured. Culchie, mulchie, bogtrotter, redneck, neanderthal etc.

Cork people call Dublin people Jackíns (pronounced jackeens) as Dublin is in the bit of Ireland that capitulated to the British first about 800 years ago. It's a reference to the union jack, the flag their (the Brits) navy now flies, so jackeen means 'little Brit waiting for his navy to return'. They pretty much deserve to be called bogtrotters for that, so city or not cork people are bogtrotters. It's all light hearted banter, my dad was from Cork.

Couple of Johnny Depp remarks at an engagement party for a young couple I know.

I got a Depp comparison comment last week, also. At first I didn't understand it, never having been likened to him before, but after I did a search I came up with some of the same pictures posted a few posts up, and I can see how, if you use your imagination, its is possible to make a comparison.

I wish I had his hair. haha
