He caught it. The replays have made this quite clear. Bad call.
Human error is something we all succumb to. However Umpire Doug Eddings has put his arrogance, vanity, and stupidity on parade in front of the entire nation by still insisting he was made the right call. Embarrassing.

Exactly what would you hope to achieve by getting him to admit he made a mistake? The game is over, the result will not change. Do you expect him to be fired or resign for one missed call that required super-slow-motion instant replay to prove that it was missed (he only had one chance to see it, and that at full speed). If he admits he was wrong and apologizes, what will that accomplish? Nothing. He knows that, and I expect his reluctance to make such an admission is more reflective of that fact than any arrogance, vanity, or stupidity on his part.

You need to understand how umpires think. Umpires are trained to stick with their judgement calls unless another umpire can provide compelling testimony to overturn a call. If an umpire changes a call because of an argument from a coach, or the fans, he has lost any credibility and opened himself up to being berated for every call from then on, right or wrong, and he would deserve it. An umpire has to stick to his guns, even if the call is bad, if only to show that he will not be bullied into changing calls. How do I know? I used to be an umpire. A good one, at least according to my peers and supervisors who voted me "outstanding umpire" two years in a row. Why don't I do it any more? Because I 'd had enough of the bullsh*t from coaches, threats from drunken fans, and having dirt thrown in my face by a baserunner after a good call that wasn't even close (yes, it really happened and you better believe the player was ejected and banned from the league for the rest of the year).

The ump may have made a mistake in judgement, but this whole mess could have been avoided if the catcher (who, by the way makes one heck of a lot more money to do his job than the entire umpiring crew put together is paid to do theirs) had made the effort to do his job properly. If you want to assign blame, or call someone arrogant and stupid, that's where you should be pointing.

Hot Air from Captain Ahab.

I was a softball umpire, a baseball umpire, and a amateur boxing referee. Your haughty air of authority holds very little water with me.
It's a matter of and integrity and honor. You make a mistake, admit it and move on. To insist on denying facts builds nothing but a corrupted ego and a dodgy reputation. If you don't intrinsically "get" this then perhaps you never will.

The way I see it is it doesn't matter if it hit the dirt and bounced in the glove or if it was a clean catch it was called a wild or dropped pitch. Called by men, men that make mistakes, just like the catcher that didn't tag the batter after the third strike that was close to hitting the dirt. How many time do you see a cathcer tag a batter after a third strile thats low?
As far as instant replay I've seen allot of blown calls in the NFL after the tape has been looked at and looked at again.
Bottom line if it was a bad call it makes up for all the calls that went against us over the years. A win is a win. Oh and by the way 5 to 2 tonight. GO SOX.

I'm so sorry. You're absolutely right, Mud. You're always right.

Whatever. Launch assaults and expect flak.

On a brighter note...
Congrats to Jon Garland on pitching a masterful game. He has the potential for a sterling future. A joy to watch.

How can I not be impressed? Four complete games in a row? Ridiculous. Sick.
Congrats to the White Sox!
No matter who wins the NLCS this promises be the most compelling World Series since 2001.

Just back from Sin City. Was suppose to go to the Keys but no such luck. Vegas wasn't a bad second choice though.

Bob so sorry about the loss. Gotta really suck to be beat so bad by a bunch of northerners. Ya notice I didn't say Yankees; we beat the team that beat them. The Astro were just out played and out coached. What was the thought process in pulling Backe. The only one hitting him was JD. So we'll pull him and put in a guy that the Sox have been knocking around the entire series.

Great series but its gotta be tough to be swept especially by a team nobody gave a shot to. The funny thing is the Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals are all favored over the Sox in Vegas for next year. The White Sox are 8 to 1 the Cubs are 12 to 1. The Sox are still not getting any respect and they just went 11 and 1 against the best in baseball.

If the White Sox can win their division for several more years in a row then "Cardinals-Yankees-Red Sox-like" respect will undoubtedly follow. If they are not able to maintain a level similar to last years's success they will probably be viewed as a '97 Marlins-like fluke.
Between the Indians, Twins, and White Sox the AL Central will be a division to watch next year.

Their success next year ultimately rests in their rotation and bullpen. If they perform anywhere close to the level of this year, I think they'll do it. Plus they have a good opportunity to go out a pick up a better DH, I think it's pretty likely they'll be in the running for another go next year for sure. I am assuming of course, that they don't have their heads up their ass and fail to re-sign Konerko.
