Over more than 40 years I have worn a number of the heaviest of horsehide (and other leather) jackets for motorcycling and a variety of outdoor activities such as kayaking and mountaineering. As well as my own purchases (of most major makers including Aero and LW) I used to work for a UK motorcycle clothing manufacturer and I often got to try out their prototype leathers before they were finalised for sale.

I have never felt uncomfortable in wearing such a new jacket or have I suffered any after effects, such as you get when 'breaking in' new leather boots. I would like to see evidence of anyone who has suffered any actual physical effects (such as blisters, abrasions or wheals) from a leather jacket. I don't think it's 'a myth' - I think it's in people's minds.

I agree,Peacoat. Been there ..done that. Fighting a brand new hvy HH jacket..especially the uniquely hvy Aero FQHH or LW can make a long MC trip much more tiring..quick. After purchasing an Aero hvy HH MC jacket and riding 420 winding mi. with many stops in one day..I decided to move the jacket on. With a rotation of other Aero HH jackets to wear...there just didn't seem to be enough time to break-in the Aero MC jacket except on the bike. Thanks...but no thanks. Even though riding a motorcycle since 1964...I had to re-learn...or again realize the importance of how comfort can make riding much more enjoyable.

I think this shows how different people are in their reaction to the same experiences. I always valued especially the feeling of security (from falls) and protection (from the cold and wet) that my heaviest HH jackets (an Aero is my favourite) provide. I'm aware that modern styles, features and materials may give a superior performance in both these regards, but I'm an old-fashioned sort of guy.

I'd far rather 'go down the road' in a spill or ride through a storm in a good '4oz+' HH jacket than a lighter weight jacket, no matter what it's made of. That's what I buy such a jacket for and that's what I expect from it.

Others can have different opinions, they are welcome to them. New HH jackets are stiff, yes, but uncomfortable? Not in my opinion.

Besides for my 641HH, the only other shot I've owned was their Vintage 585 which was an awesome jacket. To the best of my knowledge I doubt there was any felt in it. It had the feel of a regular leather jacket, and my 641's HH never felt quite right (part of the reason I disected it and took out the lining). Even with the felt removed and lining replaced I still don't really care for Schott's HH.. dare I say I sometimes think "pleather" when I look at the jacket.

With that said let me at least say that I am a fan of Schott and their customer service, and would buy from them again. Probably not a HH product but I'd buy their cowhide anyday. They have a solid company but I just can't figure out their horsehide.

how does the Schott steerhide compare to horsehide or the regular cowhide in terms of heavy, stiff, protective , breakin or to a Vanson ?? thanks.

Recently I came up with a question on schott's message blog about Interlining, used in some older mc jackets with nylon lining (i.e. buco). Interling was used between nylon and leather... it seems nobody on schott's message blog has a clearly answer, so I'm contacting people on fedora lounge who have a great reputation about their knowledge...

If you check lining labels on older Buco Leather Jackets (with Nylon lining) you'll see label says: Lining 100% Nylon, Inter Lining 100% Wool. So, I guess also famous Joseph Buegeleisen Co. used some kind of stuff between Lining and Leather...!? Harry

In adition to my recent post: I have added a pic from a buco label (repro by real mccoys). I have also seen same label on original buco's, but I didn't find a pic so I have added this one. What does this interlining mean... is this some stuff between lining and leather...!? If so... Buco Jackets from 50's have been made same way as schott jackets are made today.

I own a Buco J-22 from late 40's/early 50's -2nd label - with a nice wool lining (period before buco moved to nylon lining in their J-24 line)... and there is just leather and lining nothing more, besides an elastic strap across back to hold it in shape... ;-)

Also I have checked my Aero's I have, none of them have a 'interlining' means: just leather and a nice lining (corduroy, wool, etc.) No Stuff is added on their's leather. Therefore Aero's feel much more moldet than schotts, because schotts lining and interling on leather make impossible to feel the leather on skin. Also Schotts Jackets won't mold a lot to your own body shape... but still, I have a Black Stallion Ltd. Ed. and I'm very happy with it. Harry

Schott steer (cow) is supple and requires no breakin. I have never had a Vanson, but compared to an Aero, I would say not nearly as much protection from a go down.

You have to examine this jacket...if it feels like just a skin and a liner then maybe the reprocesed wool is attached to the HH. But rather I would think that the wool is the pile insulation that goes between the lining and HH...todays Schott jacket use Poly-twill or something like that which is basically spun polyester that is quilted and attached to the nylon liner. Back in the day I think they used wool instead of a synthetic which was either not invented or not "proven"(some of what I am writing is an educated guess...I do not own any Buco or stuff that is really old).

Hope this helps...you really need to see the jacket in question.

Wolverine, you pointed it out. Now, I see... older Jacket used reprocessed wool for Interlining and SCHOTTS today's made Jackets use Poly-twill or something like that... most of modern Jacket makers are using some kind of Interlining in farious configurations...

Only note I have to SCHOTTS Interlining, it's just a little bit to thick for my taste... so you can't go in touch with the leather. But I'm sure, as SCHOTT stated before, it doesn't affect HH or Cowhide Quality. I belive it's functional as an insulation, for lining-durability and maybe also has some use as a sweat-sponge...

Legendary says Schott no longer uses fused layer

This is a reply from Legendary customer service about the fused layer:


"Schott used to do that years ago, and have since stopped fusing their horsehides, which does make them a bit lighter at 3.0 or 3.5 oz as opposed to their original weight when fused at around 4.0-5.0 oz."
