That first one is hilarious.

Here's a really early one of Garbo around, she was about 17 and she is still absolutely stunning.
If you see anything much earlier and you probably wouldn't know it was her.

edit: I found the first picture and so have pasted it in. I think it is lovely.

I believe the book Flesh and Fantasy by Penny Stallings mentions this story.

Ha! I have that book - it's got great little tidbits and yes, some unretouched photos of the stars from the Golden Era. I remember the book stating something along the lines that the studio photo retouchers had incredible skills that have never really been duplicated, and that even with a retouched negative, it was impossible to restore that negative entirely to it's original condition.

I couldn't disagree more with your last statement.

Garbo was beautiful as a child (and i can certainly recognize her here...) she was beautiful as a teenager and she was also beautiful most of her life.
The foundations were there!

I certainly agree, it's unmistakable in this picture.
In the picture I've seen, from a book containing just pictures of Greta Garbo, she is a little older than that and doesn't have the same resemblance.
It difficult to explain without seeing it, so I'll try and find it.

Wow, I would never have known it was the same girl! Her mouth looks smaller, different eyes, different face shape, darker hair and skin, etc in the first pic.

I met Rita Hayworth at a party once. She was in her early sixties and was still beautiful but what was captivating were her eyes. They were a warm brandy color with gold flecks in them. When you saw her eyes you knew why everyone fell in love with her. She was very sweet and polite.

Hi-Desert, in the dirt...
Glark Gable...

His ears are too big and he looks like an ape," said Warner Bros. executive Darryl F. Zanuck....

Lucille Ball...back in 1938 or so... and Fred Astaire looking...Frankenstein...esque.
