Below is the coat I just bought on Ebay for $45. The measurements look great. It says it is a 40's Hollywood jacket, tailored by K. Wong of Hong Kong.

What does everyone think? Be honest. It is the only way I'll improve my eye for vintage pieces. Thanks!

It's 50's; not really sure if it's a true Hollywood Jacket, but it's a decent garment just the same. You didn't pay too much, I think. You can always consider asking some of the boys in the FL whose knowledge you respect for advice before you buy. I'm sure most wouldn't mind. That's what community is all about.:)

First, let me say that the price is very good; it's actually thrift store pricing in my area, which is saying a lot here in the San Francisco region.

Since you asked, I'd also say that I agree with the smart fellas above me in this thread and chime in to say this is 1950's coat. There are a few giveaways since you asked:

Atomic fabric
Lapels
Shoulder pads - how they sit and the shoulder structure of the jacket
Buttons - they are definately 1950's or later
Short venting in back of the jacket

Now, this doesn't mean you got ripped off. I have purchased from this seller, and don't believe they deliberately misrepresented this coat. Rather, I think they were thrown off by the 1930's label, mixed in with the sweat pads underneath the arms, which aren't common in 1950's jackets.

I would take a close look at the label, as it might be a real label sewn into the jacket later in i's life and is not actually a match. There is a store near me that I refuse to patronize, because approximately a third of their stock has real vintage labels haphazardly sewn into whatever item they think they can get the most money from. So, be sure to check that out. It could be real, or it could be a placement. And for the record, I don't think this seller would bother sewing a 1930's style label into a jacket to make a few more dollars.

The underarms look near pristine, which is a rarety.

And if you like it, nothing I wrote matters anyway. :D

Wear it in good health!

Thank you for all the feedback (esp the detailed comments from Betty). I hope the coat is as nice in person as it is online. I'm not really into the 50's style (the lapels should have told me it wasn't 40's) but if it looks sharp, I'll be happy with it. Or sell it back on Ebay. lol

What do you mean by "ripped off?"

The item has no inherent or objective price; it is worth however much someone is willing to pay for it. You decided it was worth $45. Unless something about the jacket changes (if you find a flaw the seller failed to disclose, for example), why should anything anyone says change the way you feel about the amount you paid for it?

I think it's a very interesting fabric. Would you post a picture of you wearing it?

I just meant that I want to have vintage 30's/40's stuff not spend my money on 50s/60s clothes. The seller said 40's but I think the posters here are correct that it's 50s/60s. I should have know better by the collar. It is not a bad jacket though the sleeves are tight in the biceps. I'm working on pic.

Can you show the inside of the back? Suit construction changed some time around 1956, with the lining structured differently. I'm not an expert, but it looks very 1954 to me. I agree that the top button should be unbuttoned.
I would call it very Dave Garroway. Now you need the thick black glasses frames. Peace!
(Hmmm . . . how about a Dave Garroway thread?)

I see. I don't think you'd have any trouble reselling it if it isn't what you wanted, and possibly turn a profit to boot.
