Posted in relation to numerous folks talking about GI "fishtail" parkas, and also M-1965 Field jackets.

I bought this hood from an EBay vendor: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?ite...29486.m3561.l161211&_ssn=danielsvintagecloset

Listed with description: 1980'S NOS US EXTREME COLD WEATHER Fishtail Parka HOOD Ruff M65 OG-107

It's New Old Stock (NOS) and despite its age looks like new. Suggest you use the "Make an Offer" option. DO shop around!

This hood is intended to attach to most any version of the M-1965 "fishtail" parka, and to M-1965 Field Jackets.

I'm "unsure" if this hood will attach to earlier versions of the Parka or earlier versions of the Field jacket. Likely adding button(s) or an appropriate snap fastener to a Repro will do. Suggest not irreversibly modifying an "Original" field jacket or parka.

This hood is lightly lined with a syn wool lining but clearly oversized to accommodate additional warming headgear. It's not intended to be worn either over or under a helmet--just alone with additional head insulation as needed.

These hoods are a very useful adjunct to the M-65 field jacket for cold weather. These hoods were intended to be attached to the "fishtail" parkas.

The modern velcro closure strips are a replacement for the older loop and button closures. Easier to manipulate with gloved hands but must not be clogged with snow/mud.

The Syn "fur" is a very ****py cost-cutting move, replacing the real fur (likely coyote fur) on the older versions. Good luck in finding an older version with original fur ruff not heavily damaged. I own examples of both.

3 options:
1) Leave as-is.
2) Treat the faux fur with some unscented hair conditioner, working in the conditioner lavishly, leaving it to set for 20 minutes, and rinsing with Warm water thoroughly. This will slightly improve the texture and feel of the faux fur.
3) Replace the Faux fur ruff with natural fur. Prob about $50 for real fur, and simple stitching extra. DO look around and look for fur taken off the back of the coyote, which has greater fur length/depth.

Suggest that the aged real fur will benefit from the "hair-conditioner' treatment, likely more than the faux fur.

Side-note: These Modern, extreme cold hoods are apparently not sized to the chest size of the recipient jacket, so "One size fits all".

Earlier, simple one-layer cloth hoods are available for most GI field jackets, and always the hood is sized to the chest measurement of the jacket. "Original" hoods still available in limited sizes, but Repro hoods can be had. I would not have a Field Jacket without a simple rain-shedding hood, but that's just me.
