Another beautiful Habig Homburg I picked up from Dreispitz. Thanks Sir! Habig really made some great Homburgs.

Borsalino Homburg

I also picked up this Borsalino Homburg from Dreispitz. Very beautiful felt on this one and typical Borsalino quality / style. This was made for HutKoenig Regensburg. Well known store / hat maker (amazing store front) to both Dreispitz and myself.

Well.. maybe this is about as good a place to introduce myself. I'm fairly new to hats and brand spankin' new to the forum. Figured I'd join as the info in here is phenominal. Looks like a great crowd as well.

On subject of Homburgs, I just ordered a black Bailey Wool Felt Homburg that according to USPS just hit my door so it should be waiting on me this evening.. Quick prayer that I sized her right. 58cm egg-shaped Scandinavian noggin so I'm assuming and hoping the "Large" will fit.

Why a black wool hat in July? ... Well, a few of you will recognize the following.. I get to confer a 1st degree at the lodge (AF&AM) next week, so at short notice, I had to find a lid. :) And typically since the decor/attire is traditional business typically among the lodge officers, I figured my one brimmed hat (a straw "golf type" for lack of not knowing the technical terms) I figured just wouldn't do.

But my choice for the homburg... Unique. Formally stylish and classic. The style struck me as a bit more of a step towards northern Western European traditional than the Fedora. Although I do plan on acquiring a fedora or two as well in the future. I'm seeing hats may be like Sig Sauers.. Can't just have one, and tend to be addictive. :)

I plan on making the brimmed hat a part of the wardrobe infact.. Most especially in fall/winter. So I'm sure I'll be reading a lot here hopefully enough prior to asking dumb questions.

Anyway.. Not to steal away from the thread topic. But thought I'd intro myself and say hi. Reading on now. :)

As an illegal alien of the Homburg Nation, let me be the first to say "welcome".
Post a pic or two when you can :)

As for wearing a black hat in July...today I wore my Homburg.

Thanks.. I'll try to get a pic or two up. It did certainly fit, though I've got one serious egg-shaped noggin. I assume it will "break-in"... I'm sorry I know literally NOTHING about hats. Total absolute newb! The bailey looked good I thought.. Took getting used to any kind of hat like that on my head. I had a cheaper (mast general store... yeah I know.. shooo!) fedora before but this was a whole new ball game.

One thing I am discovering having held one fur felt (a friends bailey fedora) and this wool felt bailey homburg. Fur = cool! Reason it's a bunch more expensive. I checked out a friends fur hat a few days ago, so it set my expectations high for this hat arriving yesterday. Wool was a bit of a let-down.

So I guess wool felt is the "honda rebel" and fur is the standard "harley big twin" in the hat world? ... It'll certainly be my choice for the next ones.

Hückel Homburg Exclusiv + Case

I thought I would post this one over here too. My Hückel Homburg Exclusiv + case arrived yesterday. I took a chance on size (58cm) but it fits perfectly. The quality of this hat is amazing and nearly new condition. Not quite at the level of my Hückel Fedora Superior (see profile picture) but very close. I am thinking 50s on this one but Dreispitz thinks it is older. I am checking with a source to confirm.

Hall & Hall homburg

I moved this from the Stetson Homburg thread where I accidentally posted it in my haste to do so yesterday. My apologies to Dinerman for the hijack!:eusa_doh: I meant it for this thread so here it is:

I took delivery of a very nice Hall & Hall homburg in a deep, midnight blue color a couple of weeks ago and have just gotten around to taking photos of it to post. I really liked it because the brim is wider than that of my other four homburgs, giving it a more classic look in my view. I noted it was a tad large for the size 7 it was sold as, but I was surprised to see it was a size 7 1/4 on the tag underneath the sweatband. It is a small 7 1/4 however, as the hat fit nicely after placing a thin strip of leather around the inside of the band. I will post a shot wearing it whenever I am dressed appropriately.

Homburg's Birthday

A bit of background: Over on a thread called "What's the Banjo wearing?" we began a discussion on the hat worn by famous Aussie bush poet Banjo Paterson in this photo:

banjo-paterson-profile.jpg
:

We agreed that it looks like a homburg but wondered if the photo, taken in the 1890s may have predated that form of hat: This began a search into the origin of the homburger where we discovered King Edward VII, while still Prince of Wales, had commissioned the hat while visiting Bad Homburg late in the 19th centure.

Over on the German Hutmacher thread, Dreispitz helpfully advised us that

"According to a Wikipedia entry (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homburg_(Hut)) the Prince of Wales commissioned Hatter Mockel of Bad Homburg on the 29th of August 1882 to make a Homburg hat for him. He was not the inventor, however. His German nephew Emperor Wilhelm II already wore one in green for hunting. Edward had an affection to like it and had one made in gray."

Mayserwegerner added:

"Here is some additional info on Möckel.

Möckel Bad Homburg, Germany

In 1806 pH. Möckel was founded in 1806. A industrialized hat factory was started by Phillip Möckel in 1856.

A hat called Homburg
The Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII of England, and Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, have one thing in common: their love of the Homburg. The former created it, the latter then turned it into a fashionable hat in more recent times. During his visits to Homburg, the English Prince occasionally met his nephew, Kaiser Wilhelm II., who liked to wear a special hunting uniform, which comprised, amongst other things, a green hat with the brim rolled slightly inwards on one side. Edward, who had the reputation of being one of the best-dressed men at the close of the 19th century, decided to have the hat made in an elegant shade of grey – by the Homburg-based hat manufacturers Möckel, who were even awarded a patent for their “Homburg”. The new hat quickly took the world of men’s fashions by storm, surpassing the stiff top hat and bowler hat that had until then been the usual mode of attire. The lightweight, casually-elegant “Homburg” was representative of the new joy of living. Later on, the “Homburg” was also manufactured in blue and black, although Adenauer always preferred the original grey.

Also there is hat museum in Bad Homburg.

So...all this means that THIS SATURDAY, 29 August, is the 127th birthday of your favourite hat! I suggest that FL name this day Homage to Homburg Day!
